3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.

*He lived forty days, like others who are preserved with embalming. The Egyptians grieved his death for 60 days.

4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

*After Joseph's mourning period ended, he spoke to Pharaoh's household, saying, "If you like me, please tell Pharaoh that..."

5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

*My dad asked me to promise that when he passes away, he wants to be buried in the grave he dug in Canaan. So please let me go bury him there, and then I'll return.

6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

*Pharaoh told him, "Go and honor your father's wish by burying him, just like he asked you to."

7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

*Joseph went to bury his dad, and he took everyone important from Pharaoh's palace, along with all the older people from Egypt.

8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

*All of Joseph's family, including his brothers and his father's family, left their young children, animals, and livestock in the land of Goshen.

9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

*And he had chariots and horses join him, along with many people.

10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

*They went to a place called Atad across the Jordan River. There, they grieved deeply and sadly for a long time. They also had seven days of sadness for their lost father.

11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.

*When the people living in the land, the Canaanites, saw the sadness at the place called Atad, they thought it was a very bad time for the Egyptians. So, they named it Abelmizraim, which is on the other side of the river Jordan.

12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

*And his sons followed his instructions just as he told them to do.

13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

*His children took him to Canaan, where they buried him in a cave in Machpelah's field. Abraham had purchased this field, along with the burial rights, from Ephron the Hittite prior to living near Mamre.

14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

*Joseph went back to Egypt with his brothers and everyone who went with him to bury his dad, after they had buried his dad.

15 And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

*When Joseph's brothers saw their dad had passed away, they thought maybe Joseph would dislike them and pay them back for the bad things they did to him.

16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

*They sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father made a request before he passed away, saying,"

17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

*Tell Joseph to forgive his brothers for their wrongdoing and sin against him. They ask him to also pardon the servants of God his father. When they spoke this, Joseph cried.

18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

*And his siblings also went and bowed down in front of him; they said, "Look, we are your servants."

19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

*Joseph told them, "Don't be afraid. I'm not in the position of God."

20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

*But you planned bad things against me; however, God turned it into something good. He wanted to save many lives, which happened today.

21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

*"So don't be afraid now. I will take care of you and your children. He comforted them and spoke kindly to them."

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.

*Joseph lived in Egypt with his family for a total of 110 years.

23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.

*Joseph saw the grandchildren of Ephraim, from the third level down. Also, the kids of Machir, who was Manasseh's son, were placed on Joseph's lap.

24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

*Joseph told his siblings, "I'm dying, but God will help you. He will take you from this place to the land he promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

*Joseph promised the people of Israel that God would help them, and they would take his remains with them when he died.

26 So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

*Joseph passed away at the age of 110. He was preserved and placed in a box in Egypt.
