1 Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.

Now, this is about Esau's family, also called Edom.

2 Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;

Esau married women from Canaan. One was Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite, and the other was Aholibamah, granddaughter of Anah and Zibeon, who were Hivites.

3 And Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth.

Bashemath was the daughter of Ishmael, and she was also the sister of Nebajoth.

4 And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;

Adah gave birth to Eliphaz for Esau, while Bashemath gave birth to Reuel.

5 And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.

Aholibamah had three sons: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. They were Esau's children, born to him in the land called Canaan.

6 And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.

Esau gathered his wives, children, family members, livestock, possessions, and everything he owned in Canaan, then left, moving away from his brother Jacob.

7 For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.

Because they had too many possessions, it was hard for them to live together. The foreign land where they stayed couldn't handle their animals either.

8 Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.

So, Esau lived in Mount Seir; Esau is also known as Edom.

9 And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir:

This means: This is the story of Esau, the dad of the Edomite people, living in Mount Seir.

10 These are the names of Esau’s sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

This is a list of Esau's children: Eliphaz, from his wife Adah, and Reuel, from his wife Bashemath.

11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

Eliphaz's children were named Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

12 And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau’s son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau’s wife.

Timna, a servant woman, belonged to Eliphaz, who was Esau's son. She had a child named Amalek for Eliphaz. These children were born from Esau's marriage to Adah.

13 And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

And these are Reuel's children: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. They are from his wife, Bashemath, who was Esau's wife.

14 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

And these were Esau's children with his wife Aholibamah: she gave birth to three sons named Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.

15 These were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,

These were leaders of Esau's children: from Eliphaz, Esau's first child, came these leaders - Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Kenaz.

16 Duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

Duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek were leaders from Eliphaz in the land called Edom. They were the children of a person named Adah.

17 And these are the sons of Reuel Esau’s son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

These are Reuel's sons, who is Esau's child. They have four leaders: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These leaders were from Reuel in Edom land. They are children of Bashemath, Esau's wife.

18 And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau’s wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife.

These are the sons of Aholibamah, who was Esau's wife: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. They were important leaders born to Aholibamah, daughter of Anah.

19 These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their dukes.

Here are Esau's children, also known as Edom, along with their leaders.

20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,

These are Seir's children, living in the area: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, and Anah.

21 And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.

And Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan are the leaders of the Horite tribe. They are descendants of Seir and live in the land called Edom.

22 And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna.

Lotan's children were named Hori and Hemam, while his sister was called Timna.

23 And the children of Shobal were these; Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

The descendants of Shobal were as follows: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

24 And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.

These are Zibeon's children: Ajah and Anah. Anah discovered mules while taking care of Zibeon's donkeys in the desert.

25 And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.

And Anah's children were as follows: Dishon and Aholibamah, who was Anah's daughter.

26 And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

These are Dishon's kids: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.

27 The children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.

The kids from Ezer are as follows: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.

28 The children of Dishan are these; Uz, and Aran.

The children of Dishan are Uz and Aran.

29 These are the dukes that came of the Horites; duke Lotan, duke Shobal, duke Zibeon, duke Anah,

These are the leaders from the Horite people: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, and Anah.

30 Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir.

Duke Dishon, Duke Ezer, and Duke Dishan were leaders from the region of Hori. They were among the important figures in the land called Seir.

31 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel.

Here are the rulers of the Edom land before any ruled over the Israel children.

32 And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

Bela, son of Beor, ruled in Edom. His city was called Dinhabah.

33 And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.

Jobab, Zerah's son, became king after Bela's death.

34 And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.

Jobab passed away, and Husham from the land of Temani became the new ruler.

35 And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

Husham passed away, and Hadad, son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in Moab's field, became the next ruler; his city was called Avith.

36 And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.

When Hadad passed away, Samlah from Masrekah took over as the new ruler.

37 And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.

Samuel passed away, and then Saul took over as ruler in the same place near the river, called Rehoboth.

38 And Saul died, and Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

Saul passed away, and Baalhanan, son of Achbor, became the new ruler.

39 And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

Baalhanan's son, Achbor, passed away, and Hadar took over as ruler. His city was called Pau. His wife's name was Mehetabel, and she was the daughter of Matred and granddaughter of Mezahab.

40 And these are the names of the dukes that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; duke Timnah, duke Alvah, duke Jetheth,

These are the leaders from Esau's family and their groups, based on where they lived and their names: Leaders named Timnah, Alvah, and Jetheth.

41 Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon - these are the names of three important leaders.

42 Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,

Duke Kenaz, Duke Teman, Duke Mibzar.

43 Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites.

Duke Magdiel and Duke Iram were the leaders of Edom. They lived in different areas of their land. This land belonged to Esau, who was the ancestor of the people called Edomites.
