1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

*Jacob lived in the land where his dad was also a stranger, in a place called Canaan.

2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

*This verse says that Jacob had children, including Joseph who was 17 years old. He took care of sheep with his siblings. Joseph was also with the children of Bilhah and Zilpah, who were Jacob's other wives. Joseph told his dad bad things about his brothers.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

*Now, Israel really liked Joseph a lot more than his other kids since he was born when Israel was older. He also gave Joseph a special coat with many colors.

4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

*When his brothers saw that their father favored him over everyone else, they became angry and couldn't talk nicely to him.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

*Joseph had a dream and shared it with his siblings. They already didn't like him, but after hearing the dream, they disliked him even more.

6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

*He told them, Please listen to the dream I had.

7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

*Look, while we were gathering grain in the field, suddenly, my bundle of grain rose up and stood straight. And, look, your bundles of grain surrounded mine, bowing down in respect to my grain bundle.

8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

*His brothers asked him, "Do you really want to be our leader or have control over us?" They disliked him even more because of his dreams and what he said.

9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

*He had another dream and shared it with his siblings, saying, "I had another dream, and in this dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to me."

10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

*He shared the dream with his dad and siblings. His dad scolded him and asked, "What's this dream you had? Will my wife, you, and your brothers really bow down to you on the ground?"

11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

*And his siblings were jealous of him, but his dad paid attention to what was said.

12 And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

*And his brothers took the sheep to eat in Shechem.

13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.

*Israel asked Joseph, "Don't your brothers take care of the sheep in Shechem? Let me send you to them." Joseph replied, "I'm here. Send me."

14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

*He asked him, "Go check on your family and the animals. Tell me what's happening. Then he sent him from Hebron Valley to Shechem.

15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

*A specific person discovered someone else who was walking around in a field. The discoverer then asked that person, "What are you looking for?"

16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

*He asked, "I am looking for my family. Can you tell me where they graze their animals?"

17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

*The man said they left, mentioning Dothan. So, Joseph followed his brothers and discovered them in Dothan.

18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

*When they saw him from far away, they planned to kill him before he got close to them.

19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

*They said to each other, "Look, this dreamer is coming."

20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

*Come now, kill him, throw him into a pit, and say an animal ate him. Then we'll see what happens to his dreams.

21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

*Reuben heard the commotion and rescued the boy, saying, "We shouldn't kill him."

22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

*Reuben told them not to kill anyone, but to throw the person into a hole in the desert and not touch him. This way, they could get him away from them and return him to his father safely.

23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

*When Joseph arrived at his brothers, they took off his colorful coat and left him with just the plain one.

24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

*They grabbed him and threw him into an empty hole with no water.

25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

*They sat down for a meal and looked up, seeing a group of people from Ishmael coming from Gilead with their camels carrying fragrant goods and myrrh. They were heading to Egypt to sell them.

26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

*Judah asked his siblings, "What good comes from killing our brother and hiding his blood?"

27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

*"Come, let's sell him to the Ishmeelites and not harm him ourselves since he is our family member. His brothers agreed."

28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

*Then some traders from Midian found Joseph in the pit and bought him for 20 silver coins. They took Joseph to Egypt.

29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

*Reuben went back to the well, but Joseph wasn't there. He tore his clothing in worry.

30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?

*He went back to his brothers and told them the child was gone, and he didn't know where to go.

31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

*They stole Joseph's coat, killed a goat, and covered his coat in its blood.

32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.

*They sent the colorful coat and told their father they found it. Ask now if this is your son's coat or not.

33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

*He realized it was his son's coat. He knew a wild animal must have attacked his son, and that Joseph was surely torn apart.

34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

*Jacob tore his clothes, wore sackcloth around his waist, and grieved for his son for a long time.

35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

*All his children tried to console him, but he wouldn't be comforted. He said, "I will join my son in death," and so his dad grieved for him.

36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.

*The Midianites took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, who was an important official working for Pharaoh and in charge of the guards.
