Chapter 25

1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
*Then, Abraham married another woman, whose name is Keturah.
2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
*She had five sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
*Jokshan had a son named Sheba and another named Dedan. Dedan's children were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
*And Midian's sons: Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. They were all Keturah's children.
5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.
*Abraham gave everything to Isaac.
6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
*But to the children of Abraham's other wives, Abraham gave gifts and sent them far away from Isaac, his son, towards the eastern land while he was still alive.
7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.
*These are the years of Abraham's life, totaling 175 years.
8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
*Then Abraham passed away, living a long life, as an old person, and he joined his ancestors.
9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;
*His sons Isaac and Ishmael put him to rest in a cave called Machpelah, located on Ephron's land (son of Zohar, a Hittite). This place is near Mamre.
10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
*The land that Abraham bought from the children of Heth is where he and his wife Sarah were buried.
11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.
*After Abraham died, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac lived near a well called Lahairoi.
12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bare unto Abraham:
*This verse states that Ishmael is Abraham's child, born to his servant Hagar, who was originally owned by Sarah.
13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
*This verse says: These are the children of Ishmael, and their names: First was Nebajoth, then Kedar, Adbeel, and Mibsam. They each have a unique name and belong to different generations.
14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
*And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa were places.
15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:
*Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah are places.
16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.
*Here are the children of Ishmael with their names, sorted by where they live and their forts. They lead twelve different groups of people.
17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.
*This is how long Ishmael lived: one hundred thirty-seven years. Then he breathed his last and passed away. He joined his ancestors.
18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.
*They lived from Havilah to Shur, which is near Egypt, on the way to Assyria; and he passed away while all his brothers were around him.
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac:
*This is about Isaac, who is Abraham's son. Abraham had a child named Isaac.
20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
*Isaac married Rebekah, who was Bethuel's daughter from Syria, when he was 40 years old. Rebekah's brother was Laban also from Syria.
21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
*Isaac asked God to help his wife have a baby since she couldn't have one. God listened to Isaac's request, and Rebekah, his wife, became pregnant.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
*The children inside her fought, and she asked, "If this is happening, why me?" She then went to ask God for answers.
23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
*And God told her, There are two different groups inside you, and they will become separate. The first group will be smaller than the second group. And the older one will help the younger one.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
*When it was time for her to give birth, she discovered that there were two babies in her belly.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
*Then the first one was born covered in reddish hair, looking like a furry coat, so they named him Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
*Then, his brother emerged, grabbing onto Esau's heel. His name became Jacob, and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
*The boys got older. Esau became skilled at hunting and spent lots of time outside. Jacob was straightforward, living in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
*Isaac liked Esau since he ate deer meat from him. However, Rebekah preferred Jacob.
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
*Jacob cooked a stew, and Esau arrived from working in the field and was hungry.
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
*Esau asked Jacob, "Give me that red soup, please. I'm very weak. Because of this, they named him Edom."
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
*Jacob asked, "Sell me your birthright today."
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
*Esau said, "I feel like I'm about to die. What good will this birthright do for me then?"
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
*Jacob asked for a promise, and the other person agreed and promised. He then sold his rightful inheritance to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
*Then Jacob gave Esau bread and a bean stew. Esau ate and drank, then left. This showed he didn't care about his special inheritance rights.
