Describes how Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt and slavery, and how they receive laws from God.

Chapter 9

1 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

*Then God told Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say, 'God of the Hebrews says let his people go so they can serve Him.'"

2 For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,

*If you don't let them go, and keep holding onto them tightly,

3 Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.

*Look, God's hand is affecting your animals in the field, including horses, donkeys, camels, cows, and sheep. They will suffer greatly.

4 And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children’s of Israel.

*And the LORD will separate between the animals of Israel and the animals of Egypt, and none of the children of Israel's animals will die.

5 And the LORD appointed a set time, saying, To morrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land.

*And God set a specific time, saying, Tomorrow, God will do this in the land.

6 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one.

*Then God did this action the next day, and all the animals in Egypt passed away. However, none of the animals belonging to the children of Israel died.

7 And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

*Pharaoh sent someone to check, but none of the Israeli animals were dead. Pharaoh's heart became more stubborn, and he didn't let the people leave.

8 And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron, Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh.

*And God told Moses and Aaron, "Take some ashes from the furnace and let Moses scatter them into the air in front of Pharaoh."

9 And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.

*It will turn into tiny dust everywhere in Egypt, and cause boils with blisters on people and animals across the entire land of Egypt.

10 And they took ashes of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast.

*They gathered ash from the furnace and went to Pharaoh. Moses threw the ash upwards, and it turned into a painful boil on people and animals.

11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

*The magicians couldn't face Moses due to the skin diseases; these diseases were on the magicians and everyone in Egypt.

12 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken unto Moses.

*And God made Pharaoh's heart stubborn, and he didn't listen to them; just like God had told Moses it would happen.

13 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

*And the Lord told Moses, "Wake up early in the morning and talk to Pharaoh. Tell him, 'The Lord God of the Hebrews says, "Let my people go so they can serve me."'

14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.

*For now, I'll send all my punishments to your heart, your helpers, and your folks. You'll realize no one is like me on Earth.

15 For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.

*For now, I will reach out my hand to punish you and your people with sickness. You will be removed from the Earth.

16 And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.

*So, basically it means: "I brought you into existence for a specific reason: to display my strength and make my name known everywhere on Earth."

17 As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go?

*Why do you still boast against my people, refusing to let them go free?

18 Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now.

*Look, tomorrow around this time, I will make it rain a very severe hailstorm. This hasn't happened in Egypt since it was built until now.

19 Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.

*So, go now and bring your animals and everything else in the fields back home. If you don't, hail will fall on everyone and everything left outside, and they will die.

20 He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses:

*Whoever feared God's message among Pharaoh's workers caused his servants and animals to run into the houses.

21 And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.

*Those who ignored the Lord's message left their servants and animals in the field.

22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.

*And God told Moses, "Reach out your hand to the sky so that there is hail everywhere in Egypt. It will affect people, animals, and all plants in the fields, across the entire land of Egypt."

23 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

*Moses lifted his staff up to the sky, and God sent thunder, hail, and fire onto the ground. Then, God dropped hail on Egypt's land.

24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.

*So there was hail and fire mixed with the hail, causing great suffering. It was unlike anything that had ever happened in all of Egypt since the country was formed.

25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field.

*The hail hit everywhere in Egypt, hurting people and animals in the fields, as well as all the plants and breaking trees.

26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail.

*In the land called Goshen, where the Israelites lived, there was no hail.

27 And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time: the LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.

*Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron and told them, "I made a mistake; the Lord is fair, but I and my people have been bad."

28 Intreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer.

*Ask the Lord to stop the loud thunder and hail; then I'll send you away and you can't stay any longer.

29 And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the LORD’s.

*Moses told him, "As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my hands to God, and then the thunder and hail will stop. This will show you that the Earth belongs to God."

30 But as for thee and thy servants, I know that ye will not yet fear the LORD God.

*But you and your helpers won't fear the Lord God just yet.

31 And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was bolled.

*The flax and barley were damaged because the barley had formed ears, and the flax had formed pods.

32 But the wheat and the rie were not smitten: for they were not grown up.

*But the wheat and rice weren't harmed: they weren't fully grown yet.

33 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.

*Moses left Pharaoh's city and prayed to God. Then, the thunder, hail, and rain stopped and didn't harm the land anymore.

34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants.

*When Pharaoh noticed the rain, hail, and thunder stopped, he became even more sinful and made his heart more stubborn, along with his helpers.

35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, neither would he let the children of Israel go; as the LORD had spoken by Moses.

*Pharaoh's heart became stubborn, refusing to let Israelites leave, just like the LORD said through Moses.
