Exodus

Describes how Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt and slavery, and how they receive laws from God.

Chapter 8

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

*And God told Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'God says, let my people go so they can serve me.'"

2 And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:

*If you don't let them go, know that I will hit all your edges with frogs.

3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:

*The river will have many frogs, which will enter your home, bedroom, and other rooms, as well as those of your servants. They will also be in your cooking areas and where you make dough.

4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.

*The frogs will climb onto you, your people, and everyone who works for you.

5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.

*And God told Moses, Tell Aaron to stretch out his hand with his staff over the rivers, streams, and ponds. Then, bring frogs onto the land of Egypt.

6 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.

*Aaron waved his hand over Egypt's water, and frogs appeared, covering Egypt's land.

7 And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt.

*The magicians also used their magic powers, causing frogs to appear on the land in Egypt.

8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Intreat the LORD, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD.

*Then Pharaoh asked for Moses and Aaron and said, "Please ask God to remove the frogs from me and my people. If he does, I will allow the people to leave so they can worship God."

9 And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Glory over me: when shall I intreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses, that they may remain in the river only?

*Moses told Pharaoh, "You are powerful, but when will you ask me to help you and your people get rid of the frogs from your homes and keep them in the river?"

10 And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God.

*He said, "Tomorrow." He agreed, "Okay, as you said." He did this so that they would understand no other god is like the LORD their God.

11 And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain in the river only.

*The frogs will leave you, your home, your workers, and your community. They will stay just in the river.

12 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses cried unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.

*Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh. Moses called to God because of the frogs he sent to Pharaoh.

13 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.

*And God followed Moses' words; the frogs then died everywhere - in homes, towns, and fields.

14 And they gathered them together upon heaps: and the land stank.

*They piled them up in big mounds, and the land smelled bad.

15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

*But when Pharaoh noticed a break, he became stubborn and didn't listen to them, just like the LORD had warned.

16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

*And God told Moses, Tell Aaron to extend his staff and hit the ground's dirt. This will turn into bugs all over Egypt's land.

17 And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

*So they followed through; as Aaron extended his hand using his staff, he struck the ground's dirt, turning it into lice for people and animals everywhere. The entire land of Egypt was filled with these tiny creatures in the soil.

18 And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.

*The magicians tried using their spells to create lice, but failed. As a result, lice appeared on people and animals.

19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

*Then the magicians told Pharaoh, "This is God's work!" But Pharaoh's heart became more stubborn, and he didn't listen to them, just like the LORD had said would happen.

20 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

*And God told Moses, "Wake up early in the morning and talk to Pharaoh. When he comes out for water, tell him, 'God says, let my people go so they can serve me.'"

21 Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.

*If you don't let my people go, I will send lots of flies to you, your helpers, your people, and your homes. The homes in Egypt and the land around them will be filled with these flies.

22 And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.

*On that day, I will separate the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that there are no fly swarms. You'll understand this is done by me, the LORD, who is always with you on Earth.

23 And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.

*I will create a separation between my followers and your followers. This sign will happen tomorrow.

24 And the LORD did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.

*And God did this; huge numbers of flies invaded Pharaoh's home, his officials' homes, and all of Egypt. The entire land became very dirty because of the massive number of flies.

25 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.

*Pharaoh asked for Moses and Aaron, then told them to go and offer a sacrifice to their God in the land.

26 And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?

*Moses said, "It's not right to do this." We are going to offer the Egyptian's detestable things to God. Should we do this in front of them? Won't they stone us for it?

27 We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he shall command us.

*We'll travel three days in the wild to worship God as He tells us.

28 And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away: intreat for me.

*Pharaoh said, "I will let you go to worship your God in the desert, but don't go too far; ask for my safety."

29 And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.

*Moses told them, "I'm going away for a while, and I will ask God to make the flies leave Pharaoh, his helpers, and his people tomorrow. But Pharaoh must not be dishonest anymore by not letting the people go to worship God."

30 And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.

*Moses left Pharaoh and talked to God.

31 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses; and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.

*And God did what Moses said; he got rid of all the flies bothering Pharaoh, his helpers, and his people; none were left.

32 And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

*Pharaoh made his heart stubborn then too, not allowing the people to leave.
