Retells some stories from Samuel and Kings, focusing on King David and the importance of worship.

Chapter 26

1 Concerning the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.

*About the groups of those who guarded: Meshelemiah, son of Kore, was from the family of Asaph, who were in charge of this task.

2 And the sons of Meshelemiah were, Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

*And Meshelemiah's children were: Zechariah was the oldest, then came Jediael, next was Zebadiah, and lastly, Jathniel.

3 Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.

*Elam was number five, Jehohanan was six, and Elioenai was seven.

4 Moreover the sons of Obededom were, Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethaneel the fifth,

*Moreover, Obededom's children included Shemaiah, who was the oldest, followed by Jehozabad as the second, then Joah as the third, with Sacar as the fourth, and lastly, Nethaneel as the fifth.

5 Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peulthai the eighth: for God blessed him.

*Ammiel was the sixth, Issachar was the seventh, and Peulthai was the eighth because God blessed him.

6 Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.

*Shemaiah's son had children who were strong and brave. They led their family well and were known for their courage.

7 The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men, Elihu, and Semachiah.

*The children of Shemaiah included Othni, Rephael, and Obed, along with Elzabad. Their brothers were powerful men named Elihu and Semachiah.

8 All these of the sons of Obededom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obededom.

*All the descendants of Obededom: them, their sons, and their relatives - strong and capable men for work - totaled sixty-two people from Obededom's family.

9 And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, strong men, eighteen.

*Meshelemiah had sons and brothers who were strong men, totaling eighteen.

10 Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)

*Hosah, from the family of Merari, had children. Simri was their leader, even though he wasn't the oldest, his dad chose him to be the chief.

11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.

*Hilkiah was the second, Tebaliah was the third, and Zechariah was the fourth. All of them, along with their brothers, were a total of thirteen, and they were all Hosah's sons.

12 Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.

*Among them were groups of helpers, even among the leaders, with areas to take care of, to serve in God's temple.

13 And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.

*They drew names, both the young and old, based on their family groups, for each entrance.

14 And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

*Shelemiah got the eastern area. They used stones to decide Zechariah's direction - he got the north part, as he was smart and gave good advice.

15 To Obededom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.

*To Obededom went southwards; there, his sons had the Asuppim family's home.

16 To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.

*The lot was drawn for Shuppim and Hosah moving westward, including the gate Shallecheth, along the path leading upwards, facing one side against another.

17 Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and toward Asuppim two and two.

*To the east, there were 6 Levites. To the north, there were 4 each day. To the south, there were also 4 each day. And towards Asuppim, there were pairs of 2.

18 At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.

*At the western Parbar, there were four at the bridge, and two more at another Parbar.

19 These are the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.

*Here are the groups of carriers among Kore's children and among Merari's children.

20 And of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of the house of God, and over the treasures of the dedicated things.

*Ahijah from the Levites managed the money of God's house and the special items dedicated to it.

21 As concerning the sons of Laadan; the sons of the Gershonite Laadan, chief fathers, even of Laadan the Gershonite, were Jehieli.

*Regarding the children of Laadan, who was a leader from the family of Gershonites; their main leaders were from Jehieli's family, all belonging to Laadan, the important person from the Gershonite group.

22 The sons of Jehieli; Zetham, and Joel his brother, which were over the treasures of the house of the LORD.

*The children of Jehieli were Zetham and Joel, who were in charge of the Lord's house treasures.

23 Of the Amramites, and the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites:

*From the descendants of Amram, and the people of Izhar, the residents of Hebron, and the family of Uzziel:

24 And Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler of the treasures.

*Shebuel, son of Gershom and son of Moses, was in charge of the treasures.

25 And his brethren by Eliezer; Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.

*And his relatives through Eliezer; Rehabiah was his grandson, Jeshaiah was his grandson, Joram was his son, Zichri was his son, and Shelomith was his son.

26 Which Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the chief fathers, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.

*Which Shelomith and others were in charge of all the treasures of the items that King David, important leaders, and commanders over large groups and smaller groups, and leaders of the army, had set aside as special offerings.

27 Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD.

*They gave money from their victories to support the Lord's temple.

28 And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.

*And Samuel the prophet, Saul, Abner, and Joab, along with others, dedicated things. They did this under the supervision of Shelomith and his brothers.

29 Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.

*From the Izharites, Chenaniah and his children handled outside tasks in Israel as officers and judges.

30 And of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, men of valour, a thousand and seven hundred, were officers among them of Israel on this side Jordan westward in all the business of the LORD, and in the service of the king.

*Hashabiah and his brothers, brave warriors totaling 1,070, were leaders for the people of Israel living west of the Jordan River. They helped with tasks related to the Lord and served the king.

31 Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of Gilead.

*Among the people from Hebron, Jerijah was the leader. This was during the time when their ancestors lived. In the 40th year of King David's rule, they were searched for and found skilled warriors in a place called Jazer of Gilead.

32 And his brethren, men of valour, were two thousand and seven hundred chief fathers, whom king David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king.

*And his brothers, brave leaders, totaled 2,700 important fathers. King David appointed them as rulers over the Reubenites, Gadites, and half tribe of Manasseh, handling matters related to God and the king's affairs.
