1
O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.
Oh, if only you were like my brother who nursed from the same mother as me! When I see you outside, I would give you a kiss; no one would look down on me for that.
2
I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother’s house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
I will guide you to my mom's home where she will teach me. There, I will give you a flavorful wine made from my pomegranate juice.
3
His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.
His left hand holds my head, and his right arm hugs me.
4
I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.
I ask you, girls from Jerusalem, not to provoke or wake up my love unless he wants to.
5
Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.
Who is coming from the desert, supported by their loved one? I nurtured you under an apple tree; it's where your mom gave birth to you and raised you.
6
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.
Put my love like a seal on your heart and arm, because love is very powerful; jealousy is really mean like a deep grave; its flames are like burning coal, with an intense heat.
7
Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
Love cannot be stopped by a lot of water or drowned in a flood. Even if a person gives everything they own for love, it would still be seen as worthless.
8
We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
We have a young sister without breasts. What should we do to help her when people start talking about marriage for her?
9
If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.
If she's a wall, we'll construct a silver palace on her. And if she's a door, we'll surround her with cedar wood panels.
10
I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
I am a wall with towers-like breasts; he saw me as someone he liked.
11
Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.
Solomon owned a grape plantation in Baalhamon. He gave it to caretakers, who were supposed to give him 1,000 pieces of silver each for the grapes they harvested.
12
My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
My personal vineyard is here: Solomon, you need 1,000 of them, and 200 to watch over the fruits.
13
Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it.
You who live in the gardens, your friends listen to your voice; make me hear it too.
14
Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.
Hurry up, my love! Be like a fast-moving deer or young stag on the spice-filled mountains.
