1
The song of songs, which is Solomon’s.
The most beautiful song, written by Solomon.
2
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
Let him give me loving kisses; his mouth's kisses are better than any drink.
3
Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
Because your pleasant perfume comes from special oils, your name is like a lot of spilled perfume, so the pure girls really like you.
4
Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
"Bring us closer to you; we'll chase after you. The king has invited us into his special rooms. We'll be very happy and celebrate because of you, remembering your great love even more than alcohol. Those who are honest love you."
5
I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
I am dark, but beautiful, dear daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar and the curtains of Solomon.
6
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
Don't look at me just because I'm dark-skinned. The sun has made me this way. My family was angry with me, so they made me take care of other people's grape fields. But I haven't taken care of my own grape field.
7
Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
"Tell me, the one I love, where you get your food and where you let your sheep rest during the day. Why should I be like someone who wanders away from your friends' flocks?"
8
If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds’ tents.
If you don't know, oh most beautiful woman, go along the path where the sheep walk, and take care of your young ones near the tents where the shepherds stay.
9
I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh’s chariots.
I've compared you, my love, to a group of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.
10
Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.
Your cheeks shine with pretty jewels, and your neck has golden chains.
11
We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.
We will create your edges from gold and decorate them with silver studs.
12
While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
While the king is sitting at his table, my spikenard releases its fragrance.
13
A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
A ball of myrrh, I love so much; he stays close to me at night, resting between my chest.
14
My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi.
My love is like a group of fragrant plants in the grape gardens near Engedi.
15
Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes.
Look, you are beautiful, my love; look, you are beautiful; you have the gentle eyes of doves.
16
Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.
Look, you are beautiful, my love, and delightful. Our bed is also a nice green color.
17
The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.
Our house has cedar beams and fir rafters.
