Predicts the fall of Nineveh as a judgment for their wickedness.

1 He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.

*The one who breaks things has arrived in front of you; prepare your defenses, stay alert, strengthen your core, and greatly increase your strength.

2 For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.

*The LORD has rejected Jacob's greatness and Israel's greatness because those who destroy have emptied them out, and damaged their vine branches.

3 The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.

*The strong warriors' shield is red. Brave fighters wear scarlet. On the big preparation day, chariots will have burning torches, and huge trees will shake terribly.

4 The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.

*Chariots will fight in the streets, bumping into each other on wide roads. They'll move quickly, like bright flames racing as fast as lightning.

5 He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.

*He will tell of his strong warriors. They will trip while walking. They will hurry to the city's wall and get the defenses ready.

6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.

*The river gates will open, and the royal building will fall apart.

7 And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.

*Huzzab will be taken prisoner. She will be taken to a new place, and her maidservants will guide her, making soft sounds like doves, beating on their chests.

8 But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

*But Nineveh is very old, like a big pond of water. Still, they must run away. They will shout, "Stop, stop!" but no one can look back.

9 Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

*Take the stolen silver and gold, because there's no limit to the wealth and beauty from all the nice things found.

10 She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.

*She has nothing; she's empty and worthless. People's hearts are sad, their legs shake, they have lots of pain in their hips, and their faces become dark.

11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?

*Where do lions live and eat, including young ones, where both old lions and their cubs roam without fear?

12 The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.

*The lion tore enough food for his cubs, and killed for his female lions, and filled his hiding spots with prey, and his home with stolen animals.

13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

*Look, the God of armies is against you, and he will destroy your chariots with fire, and your young warriors will be killed by swords. He will also take away your food from the earth, and your messengers' voices will no longer be heard.
