Chapter 1

1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

*And God called to Moses and spoke to him from the meeting tent, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

*Tell the people of Israel that if anyone wants to give an offering to God, they should bring it from their animals, like cows or sheep.

3 If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.

*If he gives a burnt animal sacrifice, he must choose a perfect male. He should give it freely at the entrance of the church tent where the people meet God.

4 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

*He will place his hand on the offering that is burned, and it will be accepted as a way to forgive him.

5 And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

*He will sacrifice the bull in front of God, and Aaron's priest sons will take the blood and spread it around the altar near the entrance of the meeting place.

6 And he shall flay the burnt offering, and cut it into his pieces.

*Then, he will remove the skin of the sacrificed offering that was burned, and cut it into parts.

7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire:

*Aaron's sons, the priests, will place fire on the altar and arrange the wood neatly on top of it.

8 And the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

*The priests, who are Aaron's children, will place the pieces, the head, and the fat on the wood that's burning on the altar.

9 But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

*But he washes his insides and legs with water. The priest then burns everything on the altar as a sacrificed fire offering, a pleasing smell for the Lord.

10 And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.

*If his offering is from the animals, like sheep or goats, for a special fire sacrifice, he must bring a perfect male one.

11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar.

*He will slaughter the animal on the northern side of the altar for the LORD. Then, the priest sons of Aaron will spread its blood around the altar.

12 And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

*He will cut it into parts, including its head and fat. The priest will then arrange them neatly on the wood burning in the altar's fire.

13 But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

*But he will clean the insides and legs using water. Then the priest will bring everything and burn it on the altar. It's a burned offering, a fire-made sacrifice that gives off a pleasant smell to the LORD.

14 And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons.

*If the burned offering for God is a bird, then he should offer turtledoves or young pigeons as his sacrifice.

15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head, and burn it on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar:

*The priest will take it to the altar, remove its head, and burn it on the altar. The blood will also be drained next to the altar.

16 And he shall pluck away his crop with his feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place of the ashes:

*He will remove the seeds using his feathers and throw them next to the altar on the eastern side, near the ash area.

17 And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

*And he will cut it using its wings, but won't separate it completely. The priest will then burn it on the altar, on top of the wood and fire. It is a burnt offering, a fire-made sacrifice with a pleasant smell for the LORD.
