Chapter 12

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

*And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

*Tell the people of Israel, "If a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a boy, she will be impure for seven days. During this time, she will be like the period when she was ill, and she will be impure."

3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

*On the eighth day, remove the skin covering the tip of the penis in a surgical procedure called circumcision.

4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

*Then, for 33 days, she must stay pure. She can't touch holy things or go inside the sacred place until her purification time is complete.

5 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

*If she gives birth to a girl, she will be impure for two weeks like during her period. Then, she must stay home for 66 days to cleanse herself after giving birth.

6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

*When her purification days are over, whether it's for a boy or a girl, she must bring a one-year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or turtledove for a sin offering to the tabernacle's door, to the priest.

7 Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

*Who will present it to God, making amends for her; and she will be purified from her blood flow. This is the rule for a woman who has given birth, whether it's a boy or a girl.

8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

*If she can't get a lamb, she should bring two birds or turtles. One bird/turtle is for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. The priest will then make amends, and she will be clean.
