Chapter 4

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

*So, let's not be afraid we might miss out on the special rest God promises, because we don't want anyone to feel like they didn't get enough of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

*The gospel was preached to both us and them. However, it didn't benefit them because they didn't have faith when they heard it.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

*For those who believe, they can enter into a state of rest, as he stated; this is based on his promise made out of anger, saying that if they enter his rest, the work was completed since the world began.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

*He said in one place about the seventh day, "And on this day, God rested from all his work."

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

*In this spot, if they join my peaceful relaxation.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

*Since some must enter, but those who first heard it didn't, due to not believing.

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

*Again, he sets a specific day, quoting from David, "Today, after such a long time; as it says, 'Today, if you want to hear his voice, do not make your hearts stubborn."

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

*If Jesus had given them rest, he wouldn't have talked about another day later.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

*So, there is still a resting place for the people who belong to God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

*For those who enter into true rest, they no longer need to do their own work, just like how God doesn't do any more work either.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

*So, we should work hard to reach a peaceful state, not wanting anyone to fail like those who didn't believe.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

*The words from God are fast, strong, and sharper than a double-edged knife. They can cut through soul and spirit, as well as bones and their inner part. They can also see what people think and their true intentions.

13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

*No creature can hide from God's sight, as everything is visible to Him. All things are exposed and open before His eyes, including what we do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

*Since we have a great high priest, Jesus, who is in heaven and is the Son of God, we should firmly stick to our beliefs.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

*We don't have a high priest who can't understand our weaknesses; instead, he was tempted in every way just like us, but never sinned.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

*So, let's confidently approach God's throne of kindness so we can receive forgiveness and get help when we really need it.
