Chapter 8

1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

*In summary, from what we've said, this is the main point: We have a high priest who sits at the right hand of God's throne in heaven.

2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

*A religious leader of the holy place, and of the real dwelling that the Lord set up, not made by people.

3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

*Every top leader must give presents and offerings. So, this person needs something too to give.

4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

*If he was on Earth, he couldn't be a priest because there are already priests who follow the law and offer gifts.

5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

*Serve those examples and shadows of heavenly things like Moses did when God told him how to build the tabernacle. God showed Moses a pattern on the mountain, so follow it closely.

6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

*Now he has a greater job, because he is also the link between two sides in a better agreement, based on stronger promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

*If the first agreement was perfect, there would be no need for a second one.

8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

*He says that there will be a time when God will create a new agreement with the people of Israel and the people of Judah.

9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

*This verse says that God did not follow the agreement He made with the ancestors of these people when He led them out of Egypt. This is because they didn't keep their part of the agreement, and God didn't consider them anymore, as spoken by the Lord.

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

*This means that after some time, God promises to the family of Israel that he will place his rules within their thoughts and write them in their hearts. He will then be their God and they will be his people.

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

*They won't teach everyone about knowing the Lord because everyone will already know him, from the smallest to the greatest person.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

*Because I'll forgive their wrongdoing, and won't remember their sins or wicked acts anymore.

13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

*He says there's a new agreement, so the old one is not needed anymore. Anything that gets old and weak will eventually disappear.
