Moses gives speeches about laws and the importance of following God before the Israelites enter the Promised Land.

Chapter 3

1 Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

*Then we went, and climbed the path to Bashan. King Og of Bashan came out with his people to fight us at a place called Edrei.

2 And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

*And God told me, "Don't be afraid of him. I will give him, his people, and his land to you. Then you can treat him like how you treated Sihon, the king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon."

3 So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

*So, God helped us by giving Og, the king of Bashan, and his people to us. We fought against them until there were no more people left with Og.

4 And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

*At that time, we captured all his cities. We didn't leave any city belonging to them. We took 60 cities. These were all the cities in the area of Argob, which belonged to King Og in Bashan.

5 All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

*All the cities had tall walls, doors, and locks; also many open towns without walls.

6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

*We completely wiped them out, just like we did to King Sihon of Heshbon, killing all people - men, women, and children - in every town.

7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

*But we took all the animals and city treasures for ourselves as something to enjoy.

8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

*At that time, we seized land from the two Amorite kings. This land stretched from the Arnon River to Mount Hermon, beyond the Jordan River.

9 (Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

*Hermon, called Sirion by Sidonians, and Shenir by Amorites.

10 All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

*All the flatland cities, plus Gilead and Bashan areas, up to Salchah and Edrei - these were Og's kingdom cities in Bashan.

11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

*Only Og, king of Bashan, survived among the remaining giants. His bed was made of iron and can be found in Rabbath, a city of the Ammonites' children. It was nine cubits long and four cubits wide, measured by a normal person's cubit.

12 And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

*I gave the land we had then to the people called Reubenites and Gadites. This land was from Aroer near the Arnon River, half of Mount Gilead, and their cities.

13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

*The remaining part of Gilead and all of Bashan, belonging to King Og, were given to the half tribe of Manasseh. This included the area of Argob and Bashan, known as the land of giants.

14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day.

*Jair, son of Manasseh, captured a big area from Argob to the shores of Geshuri and Maachathi. He named it Bashanhavothjair, which is still its name today.

15 And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

*I handed Gilead to Machir.

16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

*I gave half of the valley between the rivers Arnon and Jabbok to the people of Reuben and Gad from the area of Gilead. This was their boundary, and it also marked the border of the Ammonites' land.

17 The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward.

*The flat land, Jordan River, and its shoreline, from Chinnereth to the salt sea by Ashdothpisgah in the east direction.

18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.

*At that time, I told you that God gave this land to you. You must go with weapons and lead the way for your fellow Israelites who are ready for battle.

19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

*But your wives, children, and animals, who I know you have many of, will stay in the cities I gave you.

20 Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

*Until God gives rest to both you and your family, and they take control of the land God gave them on the other side of the river, you can all go back to your own areas that I have assigned to each of you.

21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.

*I told Joshua, "Your eyes have seen what the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the other kingdoms you go to."

22 Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.

*Don't be afraid of them; God will fight for you.

23 And I besought the LORD at that time, saying,

*And I asked the Lord at that moment, saying,

24 O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

*Dear God, you have shown your power and strength to your servant. Who else in heaven or on Earth can do such amazing things like you?

25 I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.

*Please let me cross and see the wonderful land beyond Jordan, the beautiful mountains, and Lebanon.

26 But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

*But God was angry at me because of you, and wouldn't listen to me. Then God told me, "Don't do it anymore; don't talk to me about this topic again."

27 Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

*Go to the top of Pisgah and look in all directions - west, north, south, and east. You can't cross the Jordan river there.

28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

*Tell Joshua to be confident and strong because he will lead the people to a new land that you will show them.

29 So we abode in the valley over against Bethpeor.

*So, we stayed in a valley near the city called Bethpeor.
