And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
*Then, David fought against the Philistines and defeated them. He also captured Methegammah from the Philistines.

And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
*And he defeated Moab, measuring them with a ruler, lowering them to the ground. He used two marks to kill them and one mark to let them live. As a result, the Moabites became David's helpers and gave him presents.

David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.
*David defeated Hadadezer, Rehob's son, the king of Zobah, when he tried to reclaim his land near the Euphrates River.

And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.
*David took 1,000 chariots, 700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers from the other guy. He made the chariot horses tired, but kept enough for 100 chariots.

And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.
*When the Syrians from Damascus arrived to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David killed 22,000 Syrian soldiers.

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
*Then, David set up outposts in a place called Damascus in Syria. The people there became helpers for David and gave him presents. Wherever David went, God protected him.

And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.
*David took the golden shields from Hadadezer's servants and brought them to Jerusalem.

And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.
*David took a lot of brass from Betah and Berothai, cities belonging to King Hadadezer.

When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,
*When King Toi of Hamath learned that David defeated all of Hadadezer's army,

Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:
*Then, Toi's son Joram went to King David to say hello and give blessings because David fought against Hadadezer, who was at war with Toi. Joram also brought gifts of silver, gold, and bronze items with him.

Which also king David did dedicate unto the LORD, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;
*King David dedicated this to God using the silver and gold from all the countries he conquered.

Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
*From Syria, Moab, Ammon, Philistines, Amalek, and the loot from Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

And David gat him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.
*When David came back from fighting the Syrians in a salt valley, he became famous because he defeated 18,000 enemies.

And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
*He placed guards in Edom, covering all of Edom with guards. Everyone in Edom then became David's helpers. Wherever David went, the Lord protected him.

And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.
*David ruled over all of Israel, and he made fair decisions and treated everyone justly.
16
And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;
*Joab, son of Zeruiah, led the army, while Jehoshaphat, son of Ahilud, kept records.
17
And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe;
*Zadok and Ahimelech were the priests, while Seraiah was the writer.

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.
*Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, led the Cherethites and Pelethites, while David's sons were main leaders.
