Chapter 4

1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

*The Spirit clearly says that in the later times, some people will leave their faith, paying attention to deceiving spirits and teachings from evil.

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

*Saying false things while pretending to be good; their moral sense becoming insensitive, like a burned iron.

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

*It is not allowed to get married and also not to eat meat, but these are things that God made for us to enjoy and be thankful for, especially those who have faith and understand the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

*Everything from God is good, and nothing should be turned down; accept it and be thankful.

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

*Because God's words and prayers make it holy.

6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

*If you remind your fellow believers about these teachings, you will be a good helper of Jesus Christ, trained in strong beliefs and good lessons, which you have learned well.

7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

*But don't believe in unholy or silly stories, and focus more on being good and religious instead.

8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

*Physical exercise helps a little: but being good and kind is very helpful for everything, bringing benefits for our lives now and in the future.

9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

*This is a true statement and deserves to be believed by everyone.

10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

*We work hard and face embarrassment because we trust in the alive God, who saves everyone but especially believers.

11 These things command and teach.

*This tells and instructs.

12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

*Don't let anyone look down on you because you're young. Instead, be a good role model for other believers in how you talk, behave, give to others, show your spirit, have faith, and live a pure life.

13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

*Until I arrive, focus on reading, encouraging others, and teaching properly.

14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

*Don't ignore the talent you have; it was given to you by a prediction, along with a ritual involving the placing of hands by the presbytery (church leaders).

15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

*Think about these ideas deeply, focus only on them, so everyone can see how much you're benefiting from them.

16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

*Be careful about what you teach and follow, keep to it; because by doing so, you'll save yourself and those who listen to you.
