Chapter 23

1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

*And all of them got up, taking him to Pilate.

2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

*They started blaming Jesus, saying, "We discovered this man corrupting the country and stopping people from paying taxes to Caesar. He claims to be the only king, Christ himself."

3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

*Pilate asked Jesus if he was the king of the Jews. Jesus replied by saying that Pilate was the one who said it.

4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

*Then Pilate told the religious leaders and the crowd, "I can't find anything wrong with this man."

5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

*They became even angrier, saying, He is inciting the people by teaching them everywhere in Judea, starting from Galilee to here.

6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

*When Pilate learned about Galilee, he asked if the person was from Galilee.

7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

*As soon as he realized he was under Herod's authority, he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that moment too.

8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

*When Herod saw Jesus, he was very happy. He wanted to meet Jesus for a long time because he heard many stories about him. He also hoped to see a miracle performed by Jesus.

9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

*Then he talked a lot with him, but he didn't say anything back.

10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

*The main priests and writers stood and strongly accused him.

11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

*Herod and his soldiers ignored Jesus, made fun of him, dressed him in a fancy robe, and then sent him back to Pilate.

12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

*On the same day, Pilate and Herod became friends. Before, they didn't get along well with each other.

13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

*Pilate gathered the main priests, leaders, and people.

14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

*He told them, "You brought this man to me, claiming he leads people astray. But after carefully examining him, I find no wrongdoing in the matters you accuse him of."

15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

*No, not even Herod, because I sent you to him, and look, no actions deserving death have happened to him.

16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

*I'll punish him, then let him go.

17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

*He had to free one person to attend the festival.

18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

*They all shouted together, "Get rid of this man and bring us Barabbas instead!"

19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

*Who caused unrest in the city and was imprisoned for murder.

20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

*Pilate, wanting to let Jesus go, spoke to them once more.

21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

*But they shouted, "Crucify him, crucify him!"

22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

*He asked them for a third time, "What did he do wrong? I haven't found any reason for his death. So, I will punish him and then let him go."

23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

*They quickly shouted loudly, demanding that he be crucified. Their voices, along with the chief priests', convinced others to do it.

24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

*Pilate decided to do what they wanted.

25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

*He let the one causing trouble and murder out of jail, who they wanted. But he gave Jesus to them to do as they wished.

26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

*As they took Jesus away, they found a man named Simon from Cyrene. They asked him to carry the cross for Jesus.

27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

*A large group of people and women followed him, all sadly crying and mourning for him.

28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

*But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Women of Jerusalem, don't cry for me, but cry for yourselves and your kids."

29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

*For, see, a time is coming when people will say, "Blessed are those who never have children, and women whose bellies never grow big, and breasts that never feed babies."

30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

*Then they will say to the mountains, Please fall on us, and to the hills, Please cover us.

31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

*If they act like this in a green tree, how will they act in a dry one?

32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

*There were also two more criminals led with him to be executed.

33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

*When they reached a spot named Calvary, that's where they nailed him up along with the criminals, with one on his right and the other on his left.

34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

*Then Jesus asked God to forgive them because they didn't understand their actions. After that, they divided his clothes and played a game to decide who would get them.

35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

*The people watched in silence. The leaders joined them, making fun of him. They said, "He saved others, but can't save himself. If he is truly Christ, the chosen one from God, let him prove it."

36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

*And the soldiers made fun of him too, walking up to him and giving him sour grape juice.

37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

*And saying, If you're the king of the Jews, save yourself.

38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

*A sign was written in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, saying, "He is the king of the Jews."

39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

*One of the criminals hanging next to Jesus said, "If you are really the Messiah, save yourself and all of us."

40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

*But the other replied, scolding him, "Don't you fear God? You are also in the same danger."

41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

*We rightfully get what we deserve for our actions, but this person hasn't done anything wrong.

42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

*He asked Jesus, "Lord, don't forget me when you enter your kingdom."

43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

*Jesus told him, "I truly say, today you will be in paradise with me."

44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

*At around noon, a darkness covered the whole world until the afternoon.

45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

*The sun became dim, and a tear was torn in the temple's curtain right down the middle.

46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

*When Jesus shouted loudly, he said to his Father, "I'm giving my spirit to you." After saying this, he stopped breathing.

47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

*When the soldier saw what happened, he praised God, saying, This person was definitely good.

48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

*All the people who gathered at the scene, watching what happened, hit their chests and left.

49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

*All the people who knew him and the women who went with him from Galilee watched everything from a distance.

50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

*And look, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; he was a good person, and fair.

51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

*He didn't agree with their plan; he was from Arimathaea, a Jewish city. He too was waiting for God's kingdom to arrive.

52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

*This person went to Pilate, asking for Jesus's body.

53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

*He removed it, wrapped it in cloth, and placed it in a stone-carved tomb where no one had been laid before.

54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

*That day was for getting ready, and Sunday was almost here.

55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

*The women who came with him from Galilee watched as his body was placed in the tomb.

56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

*They went back, got spices and fragrances ready, and then observed the Sabbath as commanded.
