Joshua

Joshua leads the Israelites into the Promised Land, conquering it through many battles.

Chapter 12

1 Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east:

*Here is a simplified version of the verse: Now, these are the rulers of the land that Israel defeated and took over their territory beyond the Jordan River. This area stretched from the Arnon River to Mount Hermon and included all the flat land to the east.

2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

*Sihon, king of the Amorites, lived in Heshbon. He controlled land from Aroer by the Arnon River to the middle of the river and half of Gilead, all the way to the Jabbok River, which marked the border for the children of Ammon.

3 And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Bethjeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdothpisgah:

*From the flat land to the Sea of Chinneroth in the east, and to the salt sea on the east called the Plain Sea, is the path to Bethjeshimoth. And from the south, beneath Ashdothpisgah.

4 And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

*And the land of Og, king of Bashan, where the remaining giants lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei.

5 And reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

*And ruled over Mount Hermon, Salcah, and all Bashan up to the land of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and half of Gilead, which was the territory of Sihon, king of Heshbon.

6 Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel smite: and Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

*Moses, as a servant of God, along with the people of Israel, defeated others. Then, Moses gave the land to the Reubenites, Gadites, and half of the Manasseh tribe.

7 And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the west, from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

*These are the rulers of the land where Joshua and the Israelites defeated people on the west side of the Jordan River. This was from Baalgad in Lebanon's valley to Mount Halak, leading to Seir. Joshua gave this land to the Israelite tribes as their property, dividing it among them.

8 In the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south country; the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

*In mountains, valleys, plains, springs, wilderness, and southern lands, lived the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

9 The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;

*The ruler of Jericho was one, and the ruler of Ai, near Bethel, was another.

10 The king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;

*One king from Jerusalem, another king from Hebron.

11 The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

*The ruler of Jarmuth was one person; the ruler of Lachish was another person;

12 The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

*The ruler of Eglon was one person; the ruler of Gezer was another person.

13 The king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;

*One king from Debir, another king from Geder.

14 The king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;

*The ruler of Hormah was one person; the ruler of Arad was another person;

15 The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

*The ruler of Libnah, just one; the ruler of Adullam, just one;

16 The king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;

*The ruler of Makkedah was one person; the ruler of Bethel was another person.

17 The king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;

*The ruler of Tappuah, just one; the ruler of Hepher, just one;

18 The king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;

*The ruler of Aphek was one person; the ruler of Lasharon was another person;

19 The king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;

*There is one king from Madon and one king from Hazor.

20 The king of Shimronmeron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;

*The ruler of Shimronmeron is one person; the ruler of Achshaph is another person;

21 The king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;

*There is one king from Taanach and one king from Megiddo.

22 The king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one;

*The ruler of Kedesh is one person; the ruler of Jokneam in Carmel is one person.

23 The king of Dor in the coast of Dor, one; the king of the nations of Gilgal, one;

*The ruler of Dor by the sea is one person, and the ruler of the Gilgal nations is another.

24 The king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.

*The ruler of Tirzah, plus one, equals all the other kings, which sum up to thirty-one.
