Joshua

Joshua leads the Israelites into the Promised Land, conquering it through many battles.

Chapter 13

1 Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

*Now Joshua was getting very old; God said, "You're old, and there's still a lot of land left to take."

2 This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,

*This is the remaining land: all the areas of the Philistines and all Geshuri.

3 From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:

*From Sihor, a place near Egypt, to the northern border of Ekron, which is considered part of Canaan, there are five leaders from Philistine groups. These groups include the Gazathites, Ashdothites, Eshkalonites, Gittites, and Ekronites, as well as the Avites.

4 From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites:

*The verse says: Starting from the south, it includes all the land of the Canaanites and Mearah near the Sidonians, going up to Aphek, until reaching the borders of the Amorites.

5 And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

*The land of the Gebalites and all of Lebanon, from where the sun rises, includes areas from Baalgad at the base of Mount Hermon to the city of Hamath.

6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

*All people living in the hill area between Lebanon and Misrephothmaim, including the Sidonians, I will force to leave for the Israelites. Divide this land into parts for the Israelites as their inheritance, just like I told you.

7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

*So now, divide this land into an inheritance for the nine tribes and the half tribe of Manasseh.

8 With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;

*With whom the people of Reuben and Gad received their land, which Moses gave them on the other side of the Jordan River, in the east, as the Lord's servant, Moses, gave it to them.

9 From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

*Starting from Aroer, a place by the River Arnon, including the city in the middle of the river, and all the area of Medeba, up to Dibon.

10 And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

*And all the towns belonging to Sihon, the Amorite king, who ruled in Heshbon, were taken up to the edge of the Ammonites' land.

11 And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salcah;

*And Gilead, along with the land of the Geshurites and Maachathites, including all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan up to Salcah.

12 All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.

*All the land of King Og in Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei, had some giant survivors left. Moses defeated them and made them leave.

13 Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

*However, the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites. Instead, these two groups continued to live with the Israelites up until now.

14 Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.

*He didn't give the Levi tribe any land; instead, their inheritance is handling the offerings burned for the Lord, just as He promised them.

15 And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families.

*Moses gave the tribe of Reuben's children their land based on their family groups.

16 And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba;

*Their shoreline went from Aroer, a place near the Arnon River, through the city in the middle of the river, and included the whole flat area around Medeba.

17 Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,

*Heshbon and its flatland cities; Dibon, Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon.

18 And Jahaza, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

*And Jahaza, Kedemoth, and Mephaath.

19 And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley,

*And Kirjathaim, Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mountain's valley.

20 And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,

*And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth. (Note: This is a direct translation and may still contain original names. If further simplification is desired, it would be best to provide more context or rephrase the verse in question.)

21 And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.

*And all the cities in the valley area, and the entire kingdom of Sihon, the king of the Amorites who ruled in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian - Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba - these were powerful leaders under Sihon living in the land.

22 Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.

*Balaam, a fortune teller and son of Beor, was killed by the Israelites along with others during a battle.

23 And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

*The land belonging to the descendants of Reuben was the area by the Jordan River. This was their inherited territory based on their family groups, including their towns and villages.

24 And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

*Moses gave land to the Gad tribe and its family groups.

25 And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

*Their border included Jazer and all the towns of Gilead, as well as half of the land of the Ammonites, extending to Aroer near Rabbah.

26 And from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

*From Heshbon to Ramathmizpeh, Betonim, and Mahanaim to Debir's border.

27 And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.

*In the valley, there are places called Betharam, Bethnimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon. These were part of King Sihon's kingdom from Heshbon. This area went all the way to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth on the other side of the Jordan River, towards the east.

28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

*This is what belongs to the kids of the tribe of Gad, based on their family groups, towns, and settlements.

29 And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families.

*Moses gave land to half of the tribe of Manasseh, and this was their property divided among their family groups.

30 And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

*The area they controlled started at Mahanaim and included all of Bashan. This was the territory of King Og of Bashan as well as the 60 towns of Jair, all located within Bashan.

31 And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

*The cities of Half Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei belonged to the children of Machir, son of Manasseh. This was half of Machir's family's inheritance in the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

32 These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

*Moses divided these lands for people to own in a place called Moab, beyond the Jordan River, near Jericho, towards the east.

33 But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.

*But Levi's tribe didn't get land from Moses; instead, the Lord God was their inheritance, just like he told them.
