Speaks against injustice and predicts Israel's punishment but ends with hope for restoration.

Chapter 1

1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

*This is a message from Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa, about Israel during the time of Uzziah, king of Judah, and Jeroboam, son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before a big earthquake happened.

2 And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

*He said, God will loudly roar from Zion, which is a city, and speak from Jerusalem, another city. The homes where shepherds live will be sad, and the top of Carmel, a mountain, will dry up and die.

3 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

*So says the Lord: Because of the three wrongs done by Damascus, and even more, I won't stop the punishment. They treated Gilead harshly using iron tools for threshing.

4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad.

*But I will send a fire to Hazael's home, burning down Benhadad's big houses.

5 I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.

*I will destroy Damascus's barrier, remove people from the Aven area, and take the ruler from the Eden's house. The Syrian people will be captured by Kir, says the Lord.

6 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

*So says the Lord: Because of the three wrongs committed by Gaza, and even more, four, I won't stop the punishment. They took everyone captive to give them to Edom.

7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:

*But I will send a fire to the Gaza wall, burning the big houses there.

8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.

*I will remove people from Ashdod, take leaders from Ashkelon, and act against Ekron. The rest of the Philistines will be destroyed, says the Lord God.

9 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:

*So says the Lord: Because of Tyre's three major wrongdoings and a fourth one, I won't hold back punishment. This is because they handed over all the captured people to Edom and forgot their promise to treat each other like family.

10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.

*But I will cause a fire on Tyre's wall, that burns its big houses.

11 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

*So says the Lord: Because of Edom's three sins, and a fourth one too, I won't hold back punishment. He chased his brother with a sword, showed no mercy, had constant anger, and held onto his fury forever.

12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

*But I will send a fire to Teman, that will burn the important buildings of Bozrah.

13 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:

*So says the Lord: Because of the three wrongs committed by the people of Ammon and a fourth one too, I won't stop the punishment. They ripped open pregnant women from Gilead to expand their land.

14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

*But I will start a big fire on the city walls of Rabbah, and it will destroy the important buildings. This will happen during a loud fight, along with a powerful storm.

15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the LORD.

*Their leader and important people will be captured, says God.
