Moses gives speeches about laws and the importance of following God before the Israelites enter the Promised Land.

Chapter 9

KJV - Deuteronomy 9:18

And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

I bowed before God again, just like before, for 40 days and 40 nights. I didn't eat food or drink water because of all your wrong actions that you did, which made you do bad things in front of God, making Him very angry.
