1
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
*But say what is good teaching that sounds right:
2
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
*Older people should be calm, serious, moderate, strong in their beliefs, loving, and patient.
3
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
*Elderly women should also act properly for holiness, not falsely accusing others and not drinking too much alcohol. They should teach good things.
4
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
*So that they can teach young women to be responsible, to love their spouses, and to love their kids.
5
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
*Be modest, faithful, take care of home, be good, and listen to your husband, so God's word is not disrespected.
6
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
*"Young people, also, should be warned to stay calm and think clearly."
7
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
*In everything, be an example of good actions: in teaching, show purity, seriousness, honesty.
8
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
*A kind and good way of speaking that can't be criticized; so those who disagree feel embarrassed and have nothing bad to say about you.
9
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
*Encourage servants to obey their masters and do everything to make them happy without arguing back.
10
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
*Not stealing, but showing true loyalty; so they can decorate the teachings of our saving God in everything.
11
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
*God's kindness showing salvation has been revealed to everyone.
12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
*This verse tells us to avoid bad things and live a good life by being responsible, fair, and close to God in the world we live in now.
13
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
*Searching for that happy promise and the wonderful return of the great God and our savior, Jesus Christ;
14
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
*He gave himself for us to save us from wrongdoing and make us his special people who are eager to do good things.
15
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
*This verse says that these things talk, encourage, and scold with complete power. Don't let anyone look down on you.
