Titus 1

Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

Paul - a helper of God and a messenger of Jesus Christ, based on trusting in God's chosen people, and accepting the truth that leads to being good.

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

In hope of lasting life, God, who can't lie, promised this before the world started.

But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

But he has shown his message at the right time through preaching, which I am given to share as commanded by our saving God.

To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

To Titus, my child who believes like us: Blessings, kindness, and peace, from the Father in heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ, our rescuer.

For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

I left you in Crete to fix any missing things and appoint leaders in each city like I told you to do.

If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

If someone is faultless, they should be a one-wife husband with well-behaved kids who are not involved in chaos or disorder.

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

A bishop should be innocent, like God's manager, not stubborn, not easily upset, not drinking too much, not violent, and not greedy for money.

But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

But someone who loves welcoming guests, likes good people, is sober, fair, religious, and self-controlled.

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Keep firmly the true teachings he learned, so he can encourage others with solid advice and prove wrong those who disagree.

For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

"There are lots of uncontrolled, arrogant talkers who lie, especially those who have been circumcised."

Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

Who should be silenced, those who destroy homes by teaching wrong things for money.

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

A prophet from their group said that Cretans are always dishonest, bad creatures, and slow to act.

This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

This testimony is real. So, strongly correct those who stray, so they believe firmly.

Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

Don't listen to false stories from Jews or man-made rules that go against the truth.

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

To those who are clean, everything is clean: but to those who are impure and don't believe, nothing is pure. They have dirty minds and consciences too.

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

They say they know God, but their actions show otherwise, as they are disgusting, disobedient, and reject good deeds.
