Chapter 5

1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

*They crossed to the other sea side, arriving in the land of the Gadarenes.

2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

*When Jesus got off the boat, a man with a bad spirit came to meet him right away from the tombs.

3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

*Who lived among the graves; and nobody could restrain him, not even with strong chains.

4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

*Since he frequently wore chains and restraints which he broke and shattered, no one could control or tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

*He constantly stayed in the mountains and tombs, yelling and hurting himself with rocks.

6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

*But when he spotted Jesus from far away, he quickly went to him and showed his respect.

7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

*And shouted very loudly, saying, "What do you want from me, Jesus, you son of the highest God? I swear by God not to torture me."

8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

*He told the evil spirit, "Leave the person you are harming."

9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

*He asked, "What's your name?" The person replied, "It's Legion. We are many."

10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

*He pleaded with him not to expel them from the land.

11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

*Now, near the mountains, there was a large group of pigs grazing.

12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

*And all the demons asked him, saying, Let us go into the pigs so we can inhabit them.

13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

*Right away, Jesus allowed it. The evil spirits left and went into the pigs instead. The whole group of around 2,000 pigs rushed quickly down a steep hill and drowned in the sea.

14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

*People who fed pigs ran away and shared the news in the city and countryside. They went out to see what happened.

15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

*People went to Jesus and saw a man who used to be controlled by demons and had many of them (a legion). Now, he was sitting, dressed, and thinking clearly. They were scared.

16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.

*People who witnessed the event explained what happened to the man possessed by a demon, as well as what occurred to the pigs.

17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

*They asked him to leave their territory.

18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

*When Jesus entered the boat, the man who used to have a demon asked him to let him stay with him.

19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

*But Jesus didn't let him do that. Instead, He told him to go back to his friends and tell them about all the amazing things the Lord had done for him and how He had shown mercy on him.

20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

*He left and told everyone in Decapolis about the amazing things Jesus did for him; everyone was amazed.

21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.

*When Jesus crossed the sea again in a boat, many people came to him, and he was close to the water.

22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

*And suddenly, a leader from the synagogue, named Jairus, came. When he saw Jesus, he fell down at his feet.

23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

*He desperately asked him, "My young daughter is very close to dying. Please, come and touch her with your hands so she can get better and live again."

24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

*Jesus went along with the man, and many people followed him, crowding around him.

25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

*A woman with bleeding that lasted twelve years

26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

*She experienced much pain from numerous doctors and spent all her money, yet got no better and only worsened.

27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

*When she learned about Jesus, she crowded in from behind and touched his clothes.

28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

*She said, "If I can just touch his clothes, I will be healed."

29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

*Immediately, her blood flow stopped, and she knew in her body that she was cured from the sickness.

30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

*And Jesus, realizing that he had lost power, turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my clothes?

31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

*And his followers asked him, "You see all these people crowding around you, but you still ask, 'Who touched me?'"

32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

*He turned to look for the person who did this action.

33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

*But the woman, scared and shaking, realizing what happened to her, approached him, bowed down, and shared everything honestly.

34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

*He said to her, "Daughter, because you believed, you are healed. Now go in peace and be free from your sickness."

35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

*As he was still talking, a messenger arrived from the leader's home, saying, "Your daughter has died. Why bother the Master any more?"

36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

*As soon as Jesus heard what was said, he told the synagogue leader, "Don't be scared, just believe."

37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

*He allowed only three people to follow him: Peter, James, and John, who was also James's brother.

38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

*He goes to the leader's house and sees the commotion and people crying very loudly.

39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

*When he arrived, he asked them, "Why all the fuss and crying? The girl isn't dead; she's just asleep."

40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

*And they made fun of him. But once he sent everyone away, he took the girl's dad and mom, along with others, and went inside where the girl was resting.

41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

*He held the girl's hand and told her, "Talitha cumi." This means, "Girl, I tell you to get up."

42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

*Immediately, the young girl stood up and started walking because she was only twelve years old. Everyone was extremely surprised.

43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

*He strictly told them not to let anyone know; and ordered to give her some food.
