Chapter 9

1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

*As Jesus walked by, he noticed a man who was born without the ability to see.

2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

*And his followers questioned him, asking, Teacher, did this blind man sin, or his parents, that he was born blind?

3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

*Jesus said, This man and his parents haven't done anything wrong; it's just so that everyone can see what God can do through him.

4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

*I need to do the tasks of the one who sent me while there is light; night will come when nobody can work.

5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

*While I'm here on Earth, I am the world's source of light.

6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

*After saying that, he spit on the ground, turned the spit into mud, and put the mud on the eyes of the blind person.

7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

*He told him, "Go wash in the Siloam pool" - which means "Sent." So he went, washed, and returned with his sight restored.

8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

*The neighbors and those who saw the man as blind asked, "Isn't this the person who used to sit and ask for money?"

9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

*Some people said, "This is the person!" Others said, "He looks like someone else!" But he insisted, "I am the one!"

10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

*So they asked him, "How did your eyes get opened?"

11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

*He replied, "A person named Jesus created mud, put it on my eyes, and told me to go to a place called Siloam Pool to wash. So I went, washed, and gained the ability to see."

12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

*Then they asked, "Where is he?" He replied, "I don't know."

13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

*They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.

14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

*On the Sabbath day, Jesus created clay and healed his eyes.

15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

*Then, the Pharisees asked Jesus again how he got his sight back. Jesus replied, "He put mud on my eyes, I washed it off, and now I can see."

16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

*So, some Pharisees thought, "This man isn't from God because he doesn't follow the Sabbath." Others asked, "How can a sinful person perform miracles?" This caused a split among them.

17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

*They ask the blind man again, "What do you think about him now that he has made your eyes work?" The blind man replied, "He is a prophet."

18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

*But the Jews didn't believe he was blind and could see again until they talked to his parents.

19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

*They asked, "Is this your son you said was born blind? How can he see now?"

20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

*His parents replied, "We know he's our child, and he was born without sight."

21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

*But how he can see now, we don't know; or who helped his eyes, we don't know: he's grown up; let him talk for himself.

22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

*His parents said these words, as they were scared of the Jews. The Jews had decided that anyone who claimed to be the Messiah would be expelled from their group.

23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

*So his parents told him, "You're old enough now, go ahead and make your own decision."

24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

*Then they called the blind man again and said, "Praise God! We know this man is a sinner."

25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

*He replied, "I don't know if he is a sinner or not, but I do know this - before I could not see, but now I can."

26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

*Then they asked him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

*He said to them, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. So why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to be his followers?"

28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.

*Then they insulted him, saying, You're his follower; but we follow Moses.

29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

*We understand that God talked to Moses. About this person, we don't know where they are from.

30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

*The man replied, "It's amazing that you don't know where he comes from, but he has made my vision better."

31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

*Now we understand that God doesn't listen to people who do wrong things. But if someone loves and obeys God, He listens to them.

32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

*Since the world started, nobody has ever heard that a person opened the eyes of someone who was born blind.

33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

*If this person isn't from God, they couldn't do anything.

34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

*They replied, "You were born with all kinds of wrongs, and now you're teaching us?" So they expelled him.

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

*Jesus learned that they expelled him; after discovering him, he asked, "Do you trust in the Son of God?"

36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

*He asked, "Who is this person, Lord, that I can have faith in him?"

37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

*And Jesus told him, "You've seen him, and he's the one talking to you."

38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

*He said, "Lord, I believe," and then he showed his respect.

39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

*Jesus said, "I came to this world to judge people. I want those who can't see to see, and I want those who can see to lose their sight."

40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

*Some Pharisees who were with him heard these words and asked, "Are we blind too?"

41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

*Jesus told them, "If you couldn't see, it wouldn't be a mistake. But since you claim to see, your mistake continues."
