Chapter 3

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

*Understand this too: In the future, dangerous times will arrive during the final days.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

*Men will love themselves too much, want more than they need, brag, be proud, say bad things about God, not listen to their parents, be ungrateful, and do unholy things.

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

*Without genuine care, betrayers, liars, out of control, harsh, haters of good people.

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

*Traitors, proud, arrogant, who love worldly pleasures more than they love God.

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

*Appearing religious but not having its strength; avoid them.

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

*These are the kind of people who sneak into homes and deceive simple women burdened with many sins, caught up in various desires.

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

*Always studying, but never understanding the true knowledge.

8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

*Just like Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, these people also go against the truth. They have warped thoughts and reject faith.

9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

*But they won't get any farther, because everyone will see their foolishness, just like before with them.

10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

*But you really understand my teaching, how I live, my goal, trust, endurance, kindness, and tolerance.

11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

*At Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, I faced hard times and was badly treated. But no matter how bad it got, the Lord saved me from everything.

12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

*Yes, anyone who lives a righteous life in Christ Jesus will face persecution.

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

*But bad people and those who lead others astray will get worse and worse, tricking others and also being tricked themselves.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

*But keep doing what you've learned and are sure about, remembering who taught you these things.

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

*Since you learned the holy books as a kid, they can help you understand how to be saved by believing in Jesus Christ.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

*All Bible passages come from God and are useful for teaching, correcting mistakes, improving behavior, and guiding us to do what is right.

17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

*So that a person close to God can be complete and well-prepared for every good thing they need to do.
