1 In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign; and forty years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

In the 7th year of Jehu, Jehoash became king and ruled for 40 years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah from Beersheba.

2 And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

And Jehoash did what was pleasing to God for as long as Jehoiada the priest guided him.

3 But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

But the tall altars weren't removed: people kept offering sacrifices and burning fragrant sticks at those tall altars.

4 And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,

Jehoash told the priests, "All the money from things dedicated to the Lord brought into His house, plus the money from anyone who passes the test, the money assigned to each person, and all the money that people feel in their hearts to give to the Lord's house, should be collected."

5 Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.

Let the priests bring it to the people they know, and fix any broken parts in the house they find.

6 But it was so, that in the three and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.

But it happened that during the 32nd year of King Jehoash, the priests hadn't fixed the holes in the temple.

7 Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.

Then King Jehoash asked for Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and said, "Why aren't you fixing the damaged parts of the temple? So, stop taking money from people you know, and use it to fix the temple instead."

8 And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.

The priests agreed not to accept any more money from the people nor fix the broken parts of the building.

9 But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.

Jehoiada, a priest, placed a box near the altar on the right side. He poked a hole in the lid. The temple guards put all the money given to the Lord in this box.

10 And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king’s scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the house of the LORD.

So when they realized there was a lot of money in the chest, the king's scribe and the high priest arrived, put the money in bags, and informed the amount they discovered in the Lord's house.

11 And they gave the money, being told, into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of the LORD: and they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, that wrought upon the house of the LORD,

They handed the money to those in charge of the LORD's house, who then gave it to the carpenters and builders working on the house.

12 And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to buy timber and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the LORD, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.

To builders and stone workers, and to get wood and cut stone to fix the LORD's house, and for everything spent on it to repair it.

13 Howbeit there were not made for the house of the LORD bowls of silver, snuffers, basons, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of the LORD:

However, they did not make silver bowls, snuffers, basins, trumpets, or any gold or silver vessels for the Lord's house, using the money brought to the house of the Lord.

14 But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired therewith the house of the LORD.

But they paid the workers with it, and used the money to fix the Lord's temple.

15 Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully.

They didn't worry about how the workers handled the money given for the workmen; they trusted them to be honest.

16 The trespass money and sin money was not brought into the house of the LORD: it was the priests’.

The payment for wrongdoing and sin payment wasn't taken to God's house; it belonged to the priests.

17 Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

Then King Hazael of Syria attacked Gath and won. He then decided to go to Jerusalem next.

18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.

King Jehoash of Judah took everything holy that his ancestors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah had dedicated, along with his own holy items and all the gold found in the Lord's temple and the king's palace. He sent it to King Hazael of Syria, who then left Jerusalem.

19 And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

Isn't everything else Joash did recorded in the book of Judah's king records?

20 And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla.

His helpers planned a secret plot and killed Joash in the Millo house, near Silla.

21 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

For Jozachar and Jehozabad, who were helpers, killed their leader and he passed away. They then buried him with his ancestors in the city of David. Amaziah, his son, took over as ruler after him.
