Chapter 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

*Paul - an apostle for Jesus, sent by God our Savior and Lord, who gives us hope.

2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

*To Timothy, my child in belief: Blessings, kindness, and peace, from our Father in heaven and our Master Jesus.

3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

*As I asked you to stay in Ephesus when I went to Macedonia, it was so you could instruct people not to teach any other message.

4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

*Don't pay attention to false stories and endless family trees that cause confusion. Instead, focus on building each other up in faith. That's what you should do.

5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

*The goal of following commands is to show love from a sincere heart, a clear conscience, and true belief.

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

*Some, after going astray, have turned to meaningless chatter.

7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

*Wanting to teach the rules; not understanding what they say or what they mean.

8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

*But we understand that the law is good when someone follows it properly.

9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

*Understanding that the law isn't meant for righteous people, but rather for those who are wicked, disobedient, and sinful. It's also for people who are unholy, impure, and for those who kill their fathers or mothers, as well as murderers in general.

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

*For those who have sexual relationships outside of marriage, for people who commit impure acts with others, for kidnappers, for people who tell lies, for those who say something different in court than the truth, and for anything else that goes against good teachings.

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

*As per the wonderful message of the happy God, that I was given to take care of.

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

*I am grateful to Jesus Christ our Lord because he made it possible for me. He believed I was reliable and chose me for a special job.

13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

*Once, this person was a blasphemer, persecutor, and hurtful. But I received forgiveness because I did it without knowing, not believing.

14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

*The kindness of our Lord was more than enough, full of belief and affection found in Christ Jesus.

15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

*This is a true statement, and everyone should agree with it: Jesus came to the world to save people who make mistakes; and I am the biggest example of those people.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

*But because of this, I received mercy so that Jesus Christ could first display his great patience through me, as an example for those who would follow and believe in him for eternal life.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

*Now to the eternal, never-ending, always alive, all-knowing King, give honor and praise forever and always. Yes, indeed.

18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

*I give you this task, Timothy, based on the predictions about you, so you can fight a good battle using them.

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

*Having faith and a clear conscience; but some, abandoning their belief, caused a wreck of their lives.

20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

*Hymenaeus and Alexander are people I handed over to Satan so they can't say bad things about God.
