Nehemiah 7

Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

Then after the wall was built and the doors were placed, along with the guards, singers, and Levites who were assigned their roles.

That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

I told my brother Hanani and Hananiah, the palace leader, to watch over Jerusalem. Hanani was trustworthy and respected God more than most people.

And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.

I told them not to open Jerusalem's gates until it gets really sunny. While they wait, they should close and lock the doors. Also, the people living there need to set up watches, with each person watching from their own spot near their home.

Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.

The city was big and important, but it had few people living inside and the buildings weren't finished yet.

And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,

My God inspired me to bring together important leaders and regular people for a record of their family trees. I discovered an existing record of those who had joined us earlier, and it listed their family information.

These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;

These are the kids from the area who returned from being captured. They were taken away by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, but now they're back in Jerusalem and Judah, each going to their own city.

Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this;

Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah? The total number of Israelite men was as follows;

The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two.

The children of Parosh numbered 2,172.

The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two.

Shephatiah's children had 372 of them.

The children of Arah, six hundred fifty and two.

In the town of Arah, there were 652 children.

The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand and eight hundred and eighteen.

The kids from Pahathmoab, from the kids of Joshua and Joab, totaled 2,818.

The children of Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four.

The kids from Elam numbered 1,225.

The children of Zattu, eight hundred forty and five.

There were 845 children from the family of Zattu.

The children of Zaccai, seven hundred and threescore.

The children of Zaccai numbered seven hundred and thirty.

The children of Binnui, six hundred forty and eight.

The children of Binnui totaled six hundred forty-eight.

The children of Bebai, six hundred twenty and eight.

The children of Bebai totaled 628.

The children of Azgad, two thousand three hundred twenty and two.

The kids from Azgad numbered 2,322.

The children of Adonikam, six hundred threescore and seven.

The children of Adonikam totaled 637.

The children of Bigvai, two thousand threescore and seven.

The children of Bigvai numbered 2,307.

The children of Adin, six hundred fifty and five.

Adin's children totaled six hundred fifty-five.

The children of Ater of Hezekiah, ninety and eight.

Hezekiah's children from Ater had ninety-eight kids.

The children of Hashum, three hundred twenty and eight.

The children of Hashum totaled 328.

The children of Bezai, three hundred twenty and four.

There were 324 children from the family of Bezai.

The children of Hariph, an hundred and twelve.

The children of Hariph total one hundred and twelve.

The children of Gibeon, ninety and five.

The children from Gibeon numbered ninety-five.

The men of Bethlehem and Netophah, an hundred fourscore and eight.

The men from the towns of Bethlehem and Netophah totaled two hundred forty-eight.

The men of Anathoth, an hundred twenty and eight.

The men from the town of Anathoth numbered 128.

The men of Bethazmaveth, forty and two.

The men from the place called Bethazmaveth numbered forty-two.

The men of Kirjathjearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred forty and three.

In the towns of Kirjathjearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, there were 743 men.

The men of Ramah and Gaba, six hundred twenty and one.

The men from Ramah and Gaba totaled six hundred twenty-one.

The men of Michmas, an hundred and twenty and two.

The men from Michmas numbered one hundred and twenty-two.

The men of Bethel and Ai, an hundred twenty and three.

The men from the cities of Bethel and Ai totaled 123.

The men of the other Nebo, fifty and two.

At another place called Nebo, there were fifty-two men.

The children of the other Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four.

In the other Elam, there were 1,254 children.

The children of Harim, three hundred and twenty.

There were 320 kids from Harim.

The children of Jericho, three hundred forty and five.

There were 345 children from the city of Jericho.

The children of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred twenty and one.

The kids from Lod, Hadid, and Ono totaled seven hundred twenty-one.

The children of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.

The children of Senaah totaled 3,930.

The priests: the children of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy and three.

The priests: descendants of Jedaiah, from Jeshua's family, totaled 973.

The children of Immer, a thousand fifty and two.

The children of Immer numbered one thousand, fifty-two.

The children of Pashur, a thousand two hundred forty and seven.

The kids from Pashur totaled 1,247.

The children of Harim, a thousand and seventeen.

The kids from Harim totaled one thousand and eighteen.

The Levites: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and of the children of Hodevah, seventy and four.

The Levites were made up of three groups: the children of Jeshua, Kadmiel, and Hodevah, totaling seventy-four members.

The singers: the children of Asaph, an hundred forty and eight.

The singers were from the family of Asaph, totaling 148.

The porters: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, an hundred thirty and eight.

The carriers were from these families: Shallum's kids, Ater's kids, Talmon's kids, Akkub's kids, Hatita's kids, Shobai's kids. In total, there were 138 of them.

The Nethinims: the children of Ziha, the children of Hashupha, the children of Tabbaoth,

The Nethinims: the kids of Ziha, the kids of Hashupha, the kids of Tabbaoth,

The children of Keros, the children of Sia, the children of Padon,

The kids from Keros, the kids from Sia, the kids from Padon,

The children of Lebana, the children of Hagaba, the children of Shalmai,

The children of Hanan, the children of Giddel, the children of Gahar,

The children of Reaiah, the children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda,

The children of Reaiah, the children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda - these are their names.

The children of Gazzam, the children of Uzza, the children of Phaseah,

The children of Besai, the children of Meunim, the children of Nephishesim,

The kids from Besai, the kids from Meunim, the kids from Nephishesim,

The children of Bakbuk, the children of Hakupha, the children of Harhur,

The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha.

The children of Solomon’s servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Perida,

Solomon's servant's children: Sotai's kids, Sophereth's kids, Perida's kids.

The children of Jaala, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,

The kids from Jaala, the kids from Darkon, the kids from Giddel,

The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon.

The kids of Shephatiah, the kids of Hattil, the kids of Pochereth from Zebaim, the kids of Amon.

All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred ninety and two.

There were 392 Nethinims and children of Solomon's workers.

And these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.

These people came from places called Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer. But they couldn't prove they were part of the Israel tribe because they didn't know their ancestors or their family lineage.

The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred forty and two.

The children of Delaiah, Tobiah's children, and Nekoda's children totaled 642.

And of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name.

And for the priests: the descendants of Habaiah, the descendants of Koz, the descendants of Barzillai, who married one of Barzillai's daughters from Gilead and took their name.

These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.

Some people looked for their family record with others who had similar ancestry, but they couldn't find it. So, they were considered unclean and removed from being priests.

And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

The leader told them not to eat the special food until a priest appeared with the Urim and Thummim.

The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,

The entire group had a total of 42,300 people.

Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women.

Next to their male and female workers, who totaled 7,337, they had 245 singers, both men and women.

Their horses, seven hundred thirty and six: their mules, two hundred forty and five:

They had 736 horses and 245 mules.

Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.

They had 435 camels and 6,720 donkeys.

And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.

Some important leaders donated to the project. The ruler contributed one thousand units of gold, fifty large bowls, and 530 priest clothes to the treasury.

And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver.

Some important leaders donated 20,000 units of gold and 2,200 pounds of silver to the project's fund.

And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pound of silver, and threescore and seven priests’ garments.

The others gave 20,000 units of gold, 2,000 pounds of silver, and 67 priest outfits.

So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.

So, the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, some people, and Nethinims lived in their towns with all of Israel. When the seventh month arrived, the Israelites stayed in their towns.
