Chapter 9

1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

*He told them, "I truly mean it when I say this: Some of you standing here will not experience death before you see God's kingdom coming with great power."

2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

*After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John to a high mountain alone. There, he changed in front of them.

3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.

*His clothes got super bright, whiter than snow, nobody on earth can make them that white.

4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

*Elias and Moses showed up to them, and they talked with Jesus.

5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

*Peter told Jesus, "It's great that we are here. We should build three shelters - one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

*He didn't know what to say, because they were very scared.

7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

*A cloud covered them, and a voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my dear son. Listen to him."

8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

*Suddenly, after they searched around, they saw no people left, except for Jesus with them.

9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

*As they went down from the mountain, he told them to not share what they saw until the Son of man rose from the dead.

10 And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

*They talked about that idea among themselves, wondering with each other what coming back to life would mean.

11 And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?

*They asked, "Why do the writers say Elias has to come first?"

12 And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

*He replied and said to them, Elijah will indeed come first, and he will fix everything; and as it's written about the Son of Man, he has to go through a lot of suffering and be disregarded.

13 But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

*But I tell you, Elijah has truly come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just like it says in the writings about him.

14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

*When Jesus reached his followers, he saw a large crowd around them and the writers asking them questions.

15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

*Immediately, everyone saw him and were extremely surprised. They quickly ran to him and greeted him warmly.

16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

*He asked the writers, "What do you want to ask them?"

17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

*And someone from the crowd replied, "Master, I've brought you my son who has an evil spirit that makes him unable to speak."

18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

*Wherever he goes, he hurts him; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and wastes away. I told your followers to expel him, but they couldn't.

19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

*He replies, saying, "Unbelieving people, why do I have to stay with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring him to me."

20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

*They took him to their leader. When the leader saw him, the spirit immediately attacked him. He fell on the ground, foaming at the mouth.

21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

*He asked his dad, "When did this happen to me?" His dad replied, "Since you were a kid."

22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

*Often it tried to throw him into fires and water to kill him, but if you can do anything, please be kind and help us.

23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

*Jesus told him, "If you can believe, you can do anything. It's possible for those who trust."

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

*Immediately, the child's dad shouted and said through his tears, "Lord, I believe in you, but help me with my lack of faith."

25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

*When Jesus saw everyone gathering, he told the bad spirit, "Silent and hearing-impaired spirit, I order you to leave this person and don't come back."

26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

*The spirit screamed, causing great pain, then left the person; making them seem like they were dead. So, people thought he was no longer alive.

27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

*But Jesus held his hand and raised him up; he stood up then.

28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

*And when he arrived home, his followers asked him in private, "Why couldn't we remove him?"

29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

*He told them, "This problem can only be solved through prayer and not eating."

30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

*So they left that place, went through Galilee, and he didn't want anyone to know about it.

31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

*He taught his followers and told them, "The human Son is given to people, and they will kill him. After being killed, he will rise again on the third day."

32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

*But they didn't get it, and were scared to ask him about it.

33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

*He arrived in Capernaum and, inside a house, he questioned them, "What were you arguing about while traveling here?"

34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

*But they stayed quiet because while traveling, they argued amongst themselves about who was the most important.

35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

*He sat and gathered the twelve disciples, then said, "If someone wants to be first, they will be last and a servant to all."

36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

*He picked up a child and placed him among them. Then, after holding the child, he told them:

37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

*Whoever welcomes one of these children in my name is welcoming me; and whoever welcomes me is not just welcoming me, but also the one who sent me.

38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

*John replied, "Lord, we saw someone driving out demons using your name, but he doesn't follow us, so we stopped him."

39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

*But Jesus told them not to stop him, because anyone who does miracles in my name shouldn't say bad things about me easily.

40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

*If someone isn't against us, they are with us.

41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

*If someone gives you a drink of water in Jesus' name because you follow Him, I promise that they will not miss out on their reward.

42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

*If anyone hurts someone who believes in me and is small, it's better for them to have a big rock tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea.

43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

*If your actions lead to bad things, stop them. It's better to live with a limitation than to have everything but end up in a terrible place.

44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

*In a place where worms don't die and fires never go out.

45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

*If a foot causes you trouble, remove it. It's better to enter without that foot and live, rather than keeping both feet but getting thrown into eternal fire.

46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

*In a place where worms don't die and fires never go out.

47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

*If your eye causes you to sin, remove it. It's better to enter heaven with only one eye than to have both and go to eternal punishment.

48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

*In a place where worms don't die and fires never go out.

49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

*Everyone will be purified by fire, and each offering will be seasoned with salt.

50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

*Salt is useful, but if it loses its flavor, how can you use it for seasoning? Keep being good and get along with each other.
