Chapter 2

1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.

*I decided that I wouldn't return to you feeling sad.

2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?

*If I cause you sadness, who makes me happy instead? It's the same person who becomes sad because of me.

3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

*I wrote this to you so that when I arrived, I wouldn't be sad about those I should be happy for. I am confident in all of you, and my happiness comes from your happiness too.

4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

*I wrote this letter to you with lots of tears because I wanted you to understand how much I love you and care for you. It's not to make you sad, but to show you my deep love for you.

5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

*But if someone has upset me, it was only a little bit, so I won't burden everyone too much.

6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

*This punishment is enough for him, given by many people.

7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

*To simply put it, you should forgive him more and comfort him, so he doesn't get too sad.

8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

*So, please promise to keep loving him.

9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

*I wrote this to test you, to see if you follow all commands.

10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

*If you forgive someone, I also forgive them. Because when I forgave someone, I did it for your sake through Christ.

11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

*So that Satan can't take advantage of us; because we know about the tricks he uses.

12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

*Additionally, when I arrived in Troas to share the good news about Jesus, and the Lord Himself opened a door for me.

13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

*I was not at peace because I couldn't find Titus, my friend. After saying goodbye, I left and went to Macedonia.

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

*Now, thank God because he constantly helps us win in Christ and shows others the goodness of his wisdom through us everywhere.

15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

*We are like a pleasant aroma to God from Christ's followers, both those who are saved and those who don't make it.

16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

*To the first person, we are like a cause of death; to the second person, we are like a cause of life. Who can handle all this?

17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

*We aren't like those who change God's words; instead, we speak honestly and with God's help, in line with what Christ teaches, when seen by God.
