Assures believers of eternal life through faith in Jesus and commands love for God and one another.

Chapter 5

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

*Whoever believes Jesus is the Messiah is born from God, and anyone who loves the one who gave birth also loves the one born from them.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

*We understand that we love God's children when we love God and follow his rules.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

*This means that true love for God involves following his rules, and these rules are easy to follow.

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

*Whatever comes from God beats the world, and this is the win that defeats the world - our belief in it.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

*Who defeats the world except for someone who believes Jesus is the Son of God?

6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

*This person arrived through water and blood - it's Jesus Christ. Not just water, but both water and blood. The Spirit confirms this because the Spirit is honest.

7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

*In heaven, there are three witnesses: the Father, the Word (which means Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. They are all one.

8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

*Three things on Earth show proof: the Spirit, water, and blood. These three all agree as one.

9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

*If people say something, God's testimony is stronger. This is because it comes from God, who has spoken about His Son.

10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

*Believing in God's Son shows you have proof within you. If you don't believe in God, you make Him a liar, because you don't trust the truth about His Son that He shared.

11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

*This means that God has provided us with everlasting life, and this life comes from his Son.

12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

*Having the Son means having life, but not having the Son of God means not having life.

13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

*I wrote this for those who trust in God's Son: to understand you have endless life and believe in God's Son.

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

*This means we are sure that when we ask for anything in line with what he wants, he listens to us.

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

*If we understand that he listens to us, whenever we ask for something, then we know we have received the requests we wanted from him.

16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

*If someone sees their friend commit a sin not leading to death, they should ask for help, and it will be given to those who don't commit such serious sins. There is a sin leading to death; I am not saying one should pray for that.

17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

*All wrong actions are sins, and there's a sin that isn't so serious it leads to death.

18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

*We understand that people who are born from God don't commit sin; those who come from God protect themselves and the evil person doesn't affect them.

19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

*We understand that we belong to God, while the entire world is filled with wrongdoing.

20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

*We understand that the true Son of God has come and taught us how to know the real him. We are connected to the real one through his son, Jesus Christ. This is the real God and everlasting life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

*Little kids, avoid false gods. Finished.
