A liberal is a person who upholds liberalism, which is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed, and equality before the law. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but they generally support civil rights, democracy, secular governance, rule of law, economic and political freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly. The term "liberal" derives from the Latin liberalis, meaning "of freedom." In Hebrew, the term is translated as ליברלי (liberali). In French, it is libéral, in Spanish liberal, and in German liberal. Historically, liberalism has evolved into various forms, including classical liberalism, social liberalism, and neoliberalism, each with distinct interpretations and applications of core liberal principles.
