Chapter 6

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

*So, what should we say next? Should we keep doing wrong things so that God's kindness becomes even more abundant?

2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

*May it not happen! So how can we, who have died to sin, keep on living in it?

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

*Do you not understand that all of us who were baptized into Christ were also baptized into his death?

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

*So, through baptism, we die with Jesus and then rise again to live a new life, just like he did after being raised by his Father's glory.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

*If we are united with him in his death, we will also be united with him in his resurrection.

6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

*Understanding that our old self was nailed to the cross with Jesus, so the part of us that causes sin would be eliminated, and we wouldn't have to follow sin anymore.

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

*For someone who has died, they are no longer bound by sin.

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

*If we die with Christ, we think we will also live again with him.

9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

*Understanding that Jesus was brought back to life, we know he can't die again; death has no control over him anymore.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

*Because when he died, he died to sin only once; but when he lives, he lives for God.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

*Consider yourselves as dead to sin but alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

*Don't let sin rule over your physical body, so you don't follow its desires.

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

*Don't let your body be a tool for doing wrong things. Instead, give yourself to God, like someone who has come back to life, and let your body be a tool for doing good things for God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

*Sin won't control you because you aren't bound by the rules, but you are under God's kindness.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

*So, should we sin since we're not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

*Do you not understand that when you become servants to someone and obey them, you become their servant? You either serve sin and its consequences, leading to death, or you serve obedience and its consequences, leading to righteousness.

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

*But thank God, you used to serve sin, but now you've listened to your heart and followed the teachings given to you.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

*Having been freed from wrongdoing, you now serve goodness.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

*I talk like regular people because of your body's weakness. Since you let your body do bad things, now let it do good things for holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

*When you obeyed sin, you were not following what was good.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

*What did you gain from those actions you're now embarrassed about? Because the outcome of those actions leads to death.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

*Now that you are free from sin and serve God, you get good results of holiness and your goal is eternal life.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

*Sin pays with death, but God's present is everlasting life via Jesus Christ, our leader.
