Chapter 5

1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

*So, by trusting in Jesus, we become right with God and experience peace.

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

*Through faith, we can enter the grace that helps us stand strong, and we are happy because we hope to experience God's great glory.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

*And not just that, but we are proud of difficulties too: understanding that going through hard times helps us become patient.

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

*And waiting, learning; and learning, confidence:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

*Hope doesn't let us down because God's love fills our hearts, sent by the Holy Spirit, a gift to us.

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

*When we didn't have enough strength, Christ died for those who didn't believe in him at the right time.

7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

*It rarely happens that someone would die for a righteous person, but some might be willing to die for a truly good person.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

*But God shows how much he loves us by the fact that when we were still doing wrong things, Christ gave his life for us.

9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

*Even more so, since we are made right with God because of his blood, we will be rescued from God's anger through him.

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

*If, when we were against God, we became friends with him because his Son died, then even more so, now that we are friends, we will be saved by his life.

11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

*Not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus, who has given us forgiveness.

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

*Because one person caused sin to enter the world, leading to death. This death affected everyone since everyone has done something wrong.

13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

*Before the law, sin existed in the world, but it wasn't considered a fault when there wasn't a law.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

*Despite this, death ruled from Adam to Moses, also affecting those who didn't sin like Adam, serving as a symbol for the one who would come later.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

*But like the wrong action, there's also a free present. Because if one person's mistake causes many to die, even more so does God's kindness and the special gift from God, given by Jesus Christ, overflow to many people.

16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

*And not like a sinful person's actions, the gift is given; because judgment brought condemnation, but the free gift brings justification for lots of mistakes.

17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

*If one person's mistake caused death to rule, then even more so, those who receive lots of grace and righteousness will rule in life through one person, Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

*So, because one person's mistake caused everyone to be judged negatively, in the same way, one person's righteousness brought a free gift that positively justified life for everyone.

19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

*Because one person's disobedience caused many to sin, so one person's obedience will cause many to be made righteous.

20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

*The law came in to increase the sin. However, wherever sin increased, grace was even more abundant.

21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

*Just like sin has ruled, causing death; in the same way, God's kindness should rule through doing what is right, leading to endless life, all because of Jesus Christ, our leader.
