Chapter 12

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

*I ask you, my friends, using God's kindness to us, to give your lives as a sacred offering to Him, which is the right thing to do.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

*Don't copy the ways of this world, but let your thinking change. This way you can discover what is good, pleasing, and complete, according to God's plan.

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

*I say, because of the grace I've received, don't overthink your importance, everyone. Instead, be reasonable and consider how much faith God has given each person.

4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

*Because in one body, there are many parts, and not all parts do the same job.

5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

*So, with many of us together, we make up one body in Christ, and each person is a part of the other.

6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

*Since we have different gifts based on the grace we receive, if we have the gift of prophecy, let's use it in a way that matches our faith level.

7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;

*Or if you're serving, wait for your turn to help; or if you're the teacher, focus on teaching.

8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

*Or the one who encourages, do it through encouragement; the one who gives, do it simply; the one who leads, do it with care; the one who shows kindness, do it happily.

9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

*Let true love guide you. Avoid bad things and choose what is good.

10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

*Treat each other with kindness and love like brothers; show more respect to others, giving them priority.

11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

*Not lazy in work; eager in heart; helping the Lord;

12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

*Being happy with hope; waiting calmly during hard times; always keeping up with praying;

13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

*Giving to the needs of holy people; having a welcoming nature.

14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

*Bless those who bother you; bless them, but don't curse back.

15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

*Celebrate with those who are happy, and cry with those who are sad.

16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

*Be united in thoughts, helping each other. Don't focus on superiority, instead, be humble towards those considered less important. Avoid boasting about your intelligence.

17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

*Don't return bad for bad. Do honest things that everyone can see.

18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

*If possible, try your best to live peacefully with everyone.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

*Dear friends, don't take revenge yourself, but let anger pass. Because it's written, "Revenge belongs to me; I will pay back," says the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

*So if your enemy is hungry, give them food; if they're thirsty, give them water. This way, you'll make them feel guilty and humiliated.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

*Don't let bad things defeat you, instead, beat bad with good.
