Chapter 6

1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

*Listen to what God says: Stand up and speak out, so that the mountains and hills can hear you.

2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’s controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.

*Listen, mountains, to God's disagreement, and you strong foundations of the earth: because God has a dispute with his people, and he will argue with Israel.

3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

*O my people, what have I done to you? In which way have I made you tired? Please tell me.

4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

*Because I took you from Egypt's land and freed you from being a servant. I also sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to lead you.

5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

*My people, recall the time when King Balak of Moab sought advice and Balaam, son of Beor, responded from Shittim to Gilgal. This was to show you the fairness of the Lord.

6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

*How can I approach the Lord and show respect to the great God? Should I come with burned sacrifices, or with one-year-old calves?

7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

*Will God be happy with a thousand lambs or many rivers of oil? Should I give my first child for my mistake, my child as payment for my wrongdoing?

8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

*God has shown you, human, what is good. What does the Lord ask from you? To be fair, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

9 The LORD’s voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

*The Lord's voice calls out to the city, and the wise person will understand your name. Listen to the rod and know who has set it up.

10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?

*Is there still wickedness in the home of the wicked person, and a small amount of something despised?

11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

*Should I consider them clean by using unfair scales and a dishonest weight bag?

12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

*The rich people there are very violent, and the people living there lie a lot. They say things that aren't true when they talk.

13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.

*So, I will also cause you pain by punishing you and making you feel empty due to your wrongdoings.

14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.

*You will eat, but not be full; your fall will happen where you are; you will grab, but not save; and what you save, I will hand over to the sword.

15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.

*You must plant seeds, but you cannot harvest them. You can crush olives, but you cannot use the oil. And you can have sweet grapes, but you cannot drink wine.

16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

*The laws of Omri and the actions of Ahab's household are remembered, and you follow their advice; so I will turn you into a wasteland and its people into a symbol of shame. That's why you will share the disgrace of my people.
