Chapter 20

1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
*The kingdom of heaven is like a homeowner who goes out early in the morning to hire workers for his garden.
2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
*Then, after agreeing to pay them one penny each day, he sent the workers to his grape garden.
3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
*At around the third hour, he left and found people not doing anything in the market area.
4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
*He told them, "Go work in the vineyard too, and I'll reward you fairly." So they left to do it.
5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
*He went out again at around 6 and 9 o'clock, and did the same thing.
6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
*Late in the day, he went outside and saw more people not working. He asked them, "Why are you just standing here all day without doing anything?"
7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
*They tell him, "No one has hired us." He replies, "Go to the vineyard too, and you will get what is fair."
8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
*So when evening came, the vineyard owner told his manager, "Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones and going to the first."
9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
*When the late workers arrived, around the 11th hour, each of them got a penny.
10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
*But when the first ones arrived, they thought they'd get more. They also each got a penny.
11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
*And after getting it, they complained about the head of the household.
12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
*They worked just one hour, and you treated them the same as us, who have carried the heavy load all day.
13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
*But he told one of them, "Friend, I'm not being unfair to you. Didn't we both agree that you would pay me a penny?"
14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
*Take what you have, and leave; I will give to the last one the same as to you.
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
*Isn't it allowed for me to do as I please with what is mine? Is your eye bad because I am good?
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
*So those who come last will be first, and those who are first will be last. This is because lots of people are invited, but only a few are picked.
17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
*Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside and told them.
18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
*Look, we are going to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the top priests and the writers, and they will sentence him to die.
19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
*And he will hand him over to non-Jews for ridicule, beating, and crucifixion; but on the third day, he will rise again.
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
*Then, Zebedee's children's mom and her boys came to him, showing respect, and asked him for a specific favor.
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
*He asked her, "What do you want?" She replied, "Let my two sons sit, one on your right side and the other on your left, in your kingdom."
22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
*But Jesus replied, "You don't know what you're asking." Do you have the strength to drink from the same cup I will drink from, and to be baptized in the same way as I am? They answered, "Yes, we can."
23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
*He says to them, "You will truly drink from my cup and be baptized like me. But it's not up to me to decide who sits next to me in heaven; that will be decided by my Father for the right people."
24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
*When the ten learned about it, they became very angry at the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
*But Jesus told them, "You know how the leaders of non-Jews use power over others, and the important people also have control over them."
26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
*But don't do that! Instead, if someone wants to be important among you, let them serve as a leader.
27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
*If anyone wants to be the leader, let them be a servant instead.
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
*Just like the Son of Man didn't come to be served, but instead to serve others and gave his life to free many people.
29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
*As they left Jericho, a huge group of people followed him.
30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.
*And look, there were two blind men sitting by the road. When they heard that Jesus was walking by, they shouted, "Have pity on us, oh Lord, you son of David."
31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.
*The large crowd told them to be quiet, but they shouted even louder, "Please, Lord! Be merciful to us. You are the son of David."
32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
*Jesus stopped, talked to them, and asked, "What do you want me to do for you?"
33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
*They ask him, "Lord, please open our eyes."
34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
*Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes; then, right away, they could see and followed him.
