1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

*The book about Jesus Christ's family history, son of David, son of Abraham.

2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

*Abraham had a son named Isaac. Isaac had a son named Jacob. Jacob had a son named Judas and other brothers.

3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

*And Judas had children named Phares and Zara from a woman named Thamar; Phares then had a child named Esrom; and Esrom had a child named Aram.

4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

*Aram had a son named Aminadab, who then had a son named Naasson, and Naasson had a son named Salmon.

5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

*Salmon had a son named Booz with a woman named Rachab; Booz had a son named Obed with a woman named Ruth; Obed had a son named Jesse.

6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

*Jesse had a son named David, who became a king. King David had a son named Solomon, whose mother was Urias' former wife.

7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

*Solomon had a son named Rehoboam, and Rehoboam had a son named Abijah, and Abijah had a son named Asa.

8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

*And Asa had Josaphat; and Josaphat had Joram; and Joram had Ozias;

9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

*Ozias had a son named Joatham, who then had a son named Achaz, and Achaz had a son named Ezekias.

10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

*Ezekias had a son named Manasses; Manasses had a son named Amon; and Amon had a son named Josias.

11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

*Josiah had children including Jeconiah and others when they were taken to Babylon.

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

*After being taken to Babylon, Jechonia had a son named Salathiel, who later had a son named Zerubbabel.

13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

*Zorobabel had a child named Abiud, who then had a child named Eliakim, and Eliakim had a child named Azor.

14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

*And Azor had a son named Sadoc; Sadoc then had a son named Achim; and Achim had a son named Eliud.

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

*Eliud had a son named Eleazar, who then had a son named Matthan, and Matthan had a son named Jacob.

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

*Jacob had a son named Joseph, who married Mary. They had a child named Jesus, also known as the Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

*All the people between Abraham and David make up 14 generations, then 14 more from David to the time in Babylon, and another 14 from there until Jesus.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

*Jesus' birth happened like this: When Mary, his mom, got engaged to Joseph, she was already pregnant from the Holy Spirit before they lived together.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

*Then Joseph, who was fair and didn't want to embarrass her, planned to end their marriage quietly.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

*But as he thought about these things, an angel from God appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to marry Mary. The baby growing inside her is a gift from God."

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

*She will have a baby boy, and you should name him JESUS. He will help save his people from the mistakes they make.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

*Now everything happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet.

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

*Look, a young woman will become pregnant and have a baby boy. They will name him Emmanuel, which means "God with us."

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

*Then Joseph, after waking up, did what the angel asked him to do and took his wife with him.

25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

*He didn't recognize her at first until she gave birth to her first child, a boy. Then he named him Jesus.
