Chapter 22

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.

*The festival of no yeast, known as Passover, was soon here.

2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

*The main priests and writers looked for ways to kill him, because they were afraid of the people.

3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

*Then Satan got inside Judas, also called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve main followers.

4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

*He left and talked with the top priests and leaders about how to hand him over to them.

5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

*They were happy and agreed to give him some money.

6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

*He made a promise and looked for a chance to betray him to them when there were few people around.

7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.

*Then arrived the day without yeast, when the passover had to be sacrificed.

8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.

*He told Peter and John to get ready the Passover meal so everyone could eat it.

9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

*They asked him, "Where do you want us to make ready?"

10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.

*He told them, "When you enter the city, a man with a water pitcher will meet you. Follow him to the house he goes into."

11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

*Ask the homeowner, "The Master asks, where is the room for guests? He wants to have the Passover meal with his friends there."

12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

*He will show you a big upstairs room that's already set up; get it ready for use there.

13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

*So they went and found it just like he said. They prepared the special meal called Passover.

14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

*When the time arrived, Jesus sat down with the twelve apostles.

15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:

*He told them, "I really want to share this special meal with you called Passover before I go through pain."

16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

*I tell you, I won't eat it again until it happens in God's kingdom.

17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

*He grabbed the cup, thanks, and said, "Take it and split it amongst you."

18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

*I tell you, I won't drink wine from grapes until God's kingdom arrives.

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

*He took bread, said a prayer, broke it, and gave it to them, telling them, "This is my body given for you. Do this to remember me."

20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

*Similarly, after dinner, he took the cup and said, "This cup represents a new agreement using my blood, which is spilled for you."

21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.

*But look, the hand of the one who betrays me is right here on the table.

22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

*The Son of Man will indeed go as planned, but woe to the person who betrays him.

23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

*They started discussing among themselves, wondering who would be the one to do this task.

24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

*They argued about who was the most important.

25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

*He told them, "Gentile kings have power over their people, and those who control them are called helpers."

26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

*But don't act like that. Instead, the person who is greatest should be humble, like a younger person. And the leader should serve, just like a servant.

27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

*Which one is more important, the person eating or the one serving? Isn't it the one eating? But I am with you like the one who serves.

28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

*You are the ones who have stayed with me through my trials.

29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

*I give you a kingdom, just like my Father gave me one.

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

*So you can enjoy food and drinks with me in my kingdom, and sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

*And Jesus said, Simon, Simon, watch out! Satan wants you so he can test you like grain.

32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

*But I prayed for you so you don't lose faith. When you change, make your fellow believers stronger.

33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

*He said, "Lord, I'm prepared to go with you wherever it leads, even if it means going to prison or facing death."

34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

*He said, "Peter, before you deny knowing me three times, a rooster won't crow today."

35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

*He asked them, "When I sent you without money, wallet, or shoes, did you need anything?" They replied, "No."

36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

*Then he told them, "Now, anyone with a purse should take it, along with their wallet. And if someone doesn't have a sword, they should sell their clothes and buy one."

37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

*I tell you that what's written must happen to me. I was considered a sinner, because my actions will come to an end.

38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

*They said, "Lord, look, we have two swords." He replied, "That's enough."

39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

*He left, as usual, for the Mount of Olives, and his followers went with him.

40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

*At the spot, he told them to pray so they don't get into trouble.

41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

*He moved away from them a short distance and knelt down to pray.

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

*"Father, if you can, please take this difficult task away from me; but I want what you want, not what I want."

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

*An angel came to him from the sky, making him strong.

44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

*In intense pain, Jesus prayed even harder. His sweat seemed like droplets of blood falling to the ground.

45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

*After praying, Jesus returned to his followers but found them asleep, saddened.

46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

*He told them, "Why are you sleeping? Wake up and pray so you don't fall into temptation."

47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

*While he was still talking, suddenly a large group of people appeared, and Judas, one of the twelve disciples, went in front of them and approached Jesus to give him a greeting kiss.

48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

*But Jesus asked him, Judas, are you going to betray the Man's Son with a kiss?

49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

*When those around him saw what was coming next, they asked him, "Lord, should we use a sword?"

50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

*And one struck the high priest's servant and chopped off his right ear.

51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

*Jesus replied, "Be patient." He then touched the man's ear and healed it.

52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?

*Then, Jesus asked the head priests, temple leaders, and elders who came to him, "Why are you coming at me with swords and sticks like you're catching a thief?"

53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

*When I used to be with you at the temple every day, you didn't harm me. But now, it's your time for darkness and evil deeds.

54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.

*They captured Jesus and escorted him to the high priest's home. Meanwhile, Peter stayed at a distance.

55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.

*Then, after lighting a fire in the middle of the room, and sitting down, Peter joined them.

56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.

*But a servant saw him sitting by the fire and stared at him closely, then she said, "This person was also with them."

57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.

*He said no, telling her, "Woman, I don't know him."

58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.

*After some time, someone else saw him and said, "You're one of them too." But Peter replied, "No, I'm not."

59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.

*After a little while, they kept saying with certainty, "This man definitely was with the other person. He's from Galilee."

60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

*Peter said, "I don't understand what you're saying." Just then, as he was speaking, a rooster crowed.

61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

*And Jesus turned to look at Peter. Peter then recalled what Jesus had told him: before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.

62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

*Peter left and cried a lot.

63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.

*The men holding Jesus made fun of him and hit him.

64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?

*Then, when they covered his eyes, they hit his face and asked, "Tell the future, who hurt you?"

65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

*They said many bad things about him in a disrespectful way.

66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

*As soon as it was morning, the important people's older members, the main priests, and those who wrote things down came together and brought him to their meeting place, saying,

67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:

*"Are you the Messiah? Tell us." And Jesus replied, "If I tell you, you won't believe."

68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.

*If I ask you too, you won't reply and won't let me go.

69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

*Afterward, the Son of Man will sit at God's powerful side.

70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.

*Then they asked, "Are you the Son of God?" He replied, "Yes, you say that I am."

71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

*They asked, "Why do we need more proof? We already heard it from his own mouth."
