Chapter 20

1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

*One day, while Jesus was teaching the people at the temple and sharing the good news, the main priests, writers, and older people came to confront him.

2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

*"Asked him, 'By what authority do you do these things? Or who gave you this power?'"

3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

*He replied, "I'll ask you one question too; please answer me."

4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

*Is John's baptism from heaven or done by people?

5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

*They thought to themselves, if we say it's from heaven, he'll ask why didn't you believe him before.

6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

*But if we say it's about people, everyone will stone us because they believe John was a prophet.

7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

*They said they didn't know where it came from.

8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

*And Jesus told them, "I don't explain how I do these actions using my authority."

9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

*Then he told the people this story: A man planted a vineyard and gave it to farmers to take care of while he went away to another place for a long time.

10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

*At harvest time, he sent a worker to the farmers to get fruit from the vineyard, but the farmers attacked him and sent him back without any fruit.

11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

*Then he sent another helper, but they hurt him too, treated him badly, and sent him away without anything.

12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

*Then he sent another one; they hurt him too and threw him away.

13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

*Then, the owner of the vineyard asked, "What should I do?" So, he decided to send his cherished son, hoping that they would respect him once they see him.

14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

*But when the farmers saw him, they talked privately, saying, He's the heir! Let's kill him so we can take the inheritance for ourselves.

15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

*So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now, what will the vineyard owner do to them?

16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

*He will arrive and eliminate these caretakers, then he'll hand over the vineyard to different people. When they heard this, they replied, No way.

17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

*He looked at them and asked, "What does this mean? 'The stone the builders didn't want, now it's the main cornerstone?'"

18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

*Whoever falls onto that stone will be hurt; but whoever the stone falls on will be turned into dust.

19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

*The top priests and writers wanted to grab Jesus right away, but they were scared of the crowd because they knew he told a story that criticized them.

20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

*They observed him, and sent spies to pretend as good people. They did this to understand his teachings and then hand him over to the governor's power and control.

21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

*They asked him, "Master, we know you speak and teach correctly. You don't favor anyone and teach the true way of God."

22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

*Is it allowed for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?

23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

*But he saw their trickiness and asked them, Why are you testing me?

24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar’s.

*Show me a penny. Who's picture and writing is on it? They replied, It's Caesar's.

25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.

*He told them, "Give to Caesar what belongs to him, and give to God what belongs to him."

26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

*They couldn't grasp what he said before the crowd, but they were amazed by his response and stayed silent.

27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

*Then, some Sadducees, who don't believe in resurrection, came to him and asked him questions.

28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

*Moses wrote that if a man's brother dies without children, the brother should marry the widow to have children for the deceased brother.

29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

*So there were seven brothers. The first one got married but had no kids before he passed away.

30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

*The second one married her, but they had no children and he passed away.

31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

*And the third one took her, just like the other seven did. They all had no children and passed away.

32 Last of all the woman died also.

*Finally, the woman passed away too.

33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

*So, in the resurrection, who will be her husband since she was married to seven men? (Note: The original verse seems to have some discrepancies and may not be a direct quote from the Bible. Please refer to the actual text for accurate interpretation.)

34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

*Jesus replied, "People in this world get married and are wedded to each other."

35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

*But those who deserve to get that world and coming back to life from being dead don't get married or give anyone in marriage.

36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

*They won't die anymore because they are like angels; they are also God's children and part of the resurrection.

37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

*Now that people have been brought back to life, Moses showed it when he talked to the burning bush. He called the Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

*He's not a God of those who have died, but of those who are alive; everyone lives to him.

39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

*Then some of the writers replied, Teacher, you have spoken wisely.

40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

*After that, they were too afraid to ask him any questions.

41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?

*He asked them, "What do people say about Jesus being David's child?"

42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

*And David writes in the Psalms book, "The Lord told my Lord, 'Sit at my right side.'"

43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

*Until I turn your enemies into something you can step on.

44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

*David calls him Lord; how can he be his son then?

45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

*Then, with everyone watching, he told his followers,

46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

*Be cautious of those who write things down. They want to wear fancy clothes, enjoy being praised in public places, sit in important spots in synagogues, and be noticed at big parties.

47 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

*Those who take widows' homes and pretend to be holy by saying long prayers will get a worse punishment.
