Chapter 10

1 After these things the LORD appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.

*After that, the LORD chose seventy more people and sent them in pairs ahead of him to every city and place where he planned to go.

2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

*So he told them, "The harvest is really big, but there aren't enough workers. Please ask the Lord to send more workers for the harvest."

3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

*Go your separate ways; remember, I am sending you out like lambs surrounded by dangerous wolves.

4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.

*Don't bring a wallet, money, or shoes; and don't greet anyone while walking.

5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

*When you go into any home, say "May peace be here" first.

6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

*If the peaceful person is there, bring peace; if not, try again later.

7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.

*Stay in one house, eat and drink what they offer, because workers deserve payment. Don't move to different houses.

8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:

*In any city where people welcome you, enjoy the food they offer.

9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

*Heal the sick people and tell them, "God's kingdom is close to you."

10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,

*In any city where people don't welcome you, just leave and walk around the streets, and say,

11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

*Even the dust from your city sticking to us, we remove it from us. But know for sure, the Kingdom of God is near you.

12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.

*But I tell you, it will be worse for that city compared to Sodom on judgment day.

13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

*Oh no, Chorazin! Oh no, Bethsaida! Because if the amazing things that happened to you had happened in Tyre and Sidon earlier, they would have repented long ago by wearing sackcloth and covering themselves in ashes.

14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

*However, it will be worse for you in the judgment compared to Tyre and Sidon.

15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

*And you, Capernaum, highly honored, will be thrown into the lowest depths.

16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.

*If someone listens to you, they listen to me. If they don't like you, they don't like me. And if they don't like me, they don't like the one who sent me.

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

*The seventy returned happily, saying, "Lord, even demons obey us because of your name."

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

*He told them, "I saw Satan like a bright flash of light falling from the sky."

19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

*Look, I give you the ability to step on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of your enemies. Nothing can harm you in any way.

20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

*Even though spirits listen to you, don't be happy about that. Instead, be happy because your names are recorded in heaven.

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

*In that moment, Jesus was happy inside and said, "Thank you, Father, ruler of heaven and earth! You have hidden these things from smart people but shown them to simple ones. This is how you wanted it, Father."

22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

*Everything is given to me by my Father. Only the Father knows who the Son is, and only the Son knows who the Father is. The Son will tell whoever he wants about the Father.

23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:

*He talked to his followers in private and said, "How lucky the people who can see the things you see."

24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

*I tell you that lots of prophets and kings wished to see what you see and didn't, as well as hear what you hear but couldn't.

25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

*Then, a lawyer stood up and asked Jesus, "Sir, what must I do to live forever?"

26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

*He asked, "What does the law say? How do you read it?"

27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

*He replied, "Love God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and also love your neighbor as you love yourself."

28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

*He said, "You answered correctly. Do this, and you will live."

29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

*But he, wanting to prove himself right, asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?"

30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

*Jesus replied, "A man traveled from Jerusalem to Jericho and was attacked by thieves. They took his clothes and hurt him, then left him almost dead."

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

*By coincidence, a priest went that way and when he saw the person, he avoided him and walked on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

*And just like that, a Levite at the spot also looked at him but then walked past without helping.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

*But a Samaritan traveling happened upon him, and when he saw the man, he felt sorry for him.

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

*And they went to him, wrapped his injuries, used oil and wine, put him on his own animal, and took him to a hotel, taking good care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

*The next day, as he left, he gave the owner two coins and told him to take care of the person. He also promised to pay back any extra costs when he returned.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

*Which of these three do you think helped the person who got robbed?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

*He said, "The one who showed kindness to him." Then Jesus told him, "Go and be kind to others just like he was to you."

38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

*As they traveled, he visited a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

*She had a sister named Mary who, like her, sat at Jesus' feet and listened to what he said.

40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

*But Martha was very busy with lots of work and went to Jesus, saying, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me all alone to work? Tell her to help me."

41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

*And Jesus told her, "Martha, dear Martha, you worry too much about a lot of things."

42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

*But one important thing matters: and Mary chose the best part, which will not be taken away from her.
