Chapter 42

1 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,

*Then Job spoke to God and said,

2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

*I understand that you are able to do anything, and nothing can be hidden from your thoughts.

3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

*Who is the person who hides advice without knowing? So, I spoke about something I didn't understand; things too amazing for me to know.

4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

*Listen, please, and I'll talk: I'll ask you and you tell me what it is.

5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

*I heard about you through someone else's words: but now, I see you with my own eyes.

6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

*Because of this, I deeply dislike myself and feel sorry while sitting in dirt and ash.

7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

*After God talked to Job, God told Eliphaz that He was angry with him and his two friends because they didn't say the right things about Him like Job did, His servant.

8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

*So, get seven bulls and seven rams now, go to Job, offer a sacrifice for yourselves. Job will pray for you. I'll accept his prayer. Otherwise, I might punish you for not speaking properly about me like Job did.

9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

*Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar went and followed the Lord's instructions; the Lord also approved of Job.

10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

*Then God ended Job's time of being held captive, after he asked for help for his friends. God also doubled Job's possessions from before.

11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.

*Then, all his brothers and sisters, along with friends from before, came to visit him and shared a meal at his house. They expressed sympathy and comforted him about the hardships the LORD had sent his way. Each person gave him some money and a gold earring as well.

12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

*So, God blessed Job's later life even more than before. He had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 strong oxen for work, and 1,000 female donkeys.

13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.

*He had seven sons and three daughters too.

14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.

*He named the first one Jemima, the second one Kezia, and the third one Kerenhappuch.

15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

*In the whole area, no other women as beautiful as Job's daughters were found. Their father gave them equal inheritance with their brothers.

16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.

*After that, Job lived 140 more years and witnessed his children and their children's children, totaling four generations.

17 So Job died, being old and full of days.

*Job passed away, having lived a long life.
