Jeremiah 32

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.

The message given to Jeremiah by God during Zedekiah's tenth year as king of Judah, which was also Nebuchadnezzar's eighteenth year.

For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house.

Then, the Babylon army surrounded Jerusalem. At this time, Jeremiah, a prophet, was locked up in the prison yard, located at the king's home in Judah.

For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;

Zedekiah, king of Judah, had imprisoned him because he asked, "Why are you saying, 'The Lord says, I will give this city to the king of Babylon, and he will capture it'?"

And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;

Zedekiah, king of Judah, won't avoid the Chaldeans. He will be given to the king of Babylon and they will talk face-to-face. Zedekiah's eyes will see the king of Babylon's eyes.

And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper.

He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will stay until I come to him, says God. Even if you fight the Babylonians, you won't succeed.

And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

And Jeremiah said, God spoke to me, saying,

Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.

Look, a person named Hanameel, who is your uncle, will come to you. He will ask you to buy his field in Anathoth because you have the right to redeem it.

So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

Hanameel, my uncle's son, came to me in prison, as the Lord said he would. He asked me to buy his field in Anathoth, which is in Benjamin's region. Since it's my inheritance, I should redeem and purchase it. I realized this was God's message.

And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.

I purchased the land from Hanameel, my uncle's nephew, located in Anathoth. I paid him with exactly 17 silver shekels.

And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.

I agreed with the proof, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money using scales.

So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:

So, I gathered the proof of the purchase, including the sealed part following the law and tradition, and the unsealed part.

And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.

I told Baruch, son of Neriah and grandson of Maaseiah, about the purchase while Hanameel, my uncle's son, and witnesses were there. This happened in front of all the Jews sitting in the prison courtyard.

And I charged Baruch before them, saying,

I told Baruch to do this in front of them, saying,

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days.

So says the Lord, the God of Israel: Take the proofs of the purchase, both the sealed one and the open one; then put them in a pottery jar so they last for a long time.

For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.

So says the Lord, ruler of heaven's armies and God of Israel: Homes, farms, and gardens will be owned once more in this land.

Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying,

Now that I gave the proof of the purchase to Baruch, son of Neriah, I asked the LORD in prayer,

Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

Dear Lord God, see what you have done - you created the heavens and the earth with your great strength and powerful reach, and there's nothing that is too difficult for you to achieve.

Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,

You show kindness to many people. You punish the wrongdoing of parents by affecting their children. The great and powerful God, who controls armies, has this name.

Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

You are skilled at giving advice and powerful in your actions. You see everything people do, so you reward each person based on their choices and the results of their actions.

Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day;

Which has created signs and miracles in Egypt, up to now, and in Israel, and elsewhere; and you have gained a reputation, just like today.

And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror;

And you have taken your people Israel from the land of Egypt using miracles, amazing acts, powerful strength, and an extended arm, all while causing great fear.

And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;

And you have given them this land, which you promised their ancestors to give them, a land full of milk and honey.

And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:

They entered and took control, but didn't listen or follow your rules. They didn't do what you told them. So, you made all these problems happen to them.

Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.

Look, the mountains have arrived at the city to conquer it. The city is now under the control of the Chaldeans fighting against it because of the sword, famine, and disease. Everything you said has happened, and look, you can see it happening.

And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

And you told me, dear God, to buy the land with money and have witnesses. This is because the city has been taken by the Chaldeans.

Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,

Then, the LORD spoke to Jeremiah, saying,

Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

Look, I am the LORD, the God of everyone who has flesh and blood: can anything be too difficult for me?

Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:

So, God says, "I will let the Chaldeans and King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon take this city."

And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.

The Chaldeans fighting this city will light it on fire and destroy it, including the houses where people worshipped Baal and other gods, in an attempt to make me very angry.

For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.

The children of Israel and Judah mostly did bad things when they were young. The children of Israel made me angry with the things they made using their hands, says God.

For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,

This city has been like a cause for my anger and fury since the day it was built until now. Because of this, I decided to move it away from me.

Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Due to the wicked actions of the children of Israel and Judah that made me angry, it is their leaders, priests, prophets, people of Judah, and residents of Jerusalem who are involved in this.

And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.

They turned away from me, not facing me. I taught them early and often, but they didn't listen to my lessons.

But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.

But they put their disgusting things in the house named after me, making it impure.

And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

They built Baal altars in a valley, using fire for their children to honor Molech. This was not my command and I didn't think they'd do such a terrible act, causing Judah to sin.

And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;

And now, this is what the Lord, God of Israel, says about this city you're talking about: It will be given to the king of Babylon if he fights for it, and also because of hunger and sickness.

Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

Look, I will bring them back from all the countries where I sent them because of my anger and rage. I will take them back here and make sure they can live safely.

And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:

They will be my people, and I will be their God.

And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:

I will give them one heart and one path so they always fear me, benefiting them and their future kids.

And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

I will create a lasting agreement with them, promising never to leave them and doing them only good. I will place my fear in their hearts so they won't leave me.

Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.

Yes, I will be happy to help them and do good for them. I will also firmly plant them in this land with all my heart and all my soul.

For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

So says the Lord: Just like I caused all this big trouble for these people, I will also give them all the good things I've promised them.

And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Fields will be purchased in this land, which you say is empty with no people or animals; it has been taken over by the Chaldeans.

Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.

People will buy land using money and have proof, seal it, and get witnesses in areas like Benjamin, around Jerusalem, Judah's cities, mountain cities, valley cities, and southern cities. This is because God says he will bring their captives back.
