Chapter 40

1 In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me thither.

*In the 25th year of being captured, at the start of the year, on the 10th day of the month, during the 14th year after the city was punished, on that very day, the LORD's hand affected me and led me there.

2 In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.

*God showed me a vision of Israel's land and placed me on a tall mountain that looked like a city's framework to the south.

3 And he brought me thither, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate.

*He took me to that place, and I saw a man who looked like he was made of bronze. He had a thin piece of flax and a ruler in his hand. He was standing at the entrance.

4 And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.

*The man told me, "Look with your eyes, listen with your ears, and focus your heart on everything I show you. You are here so I can show these things to you, and then you must tell the people of Israel everything you see."

5 And behold a wall on the outside of the house round about, and in the man’s hand a measuring reed of six cubits long by the cubit and an hand breadth: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed.

*And look, there's a wall around the house, and the man has a measuring stick that is 6 cubits long. He uses it to measure the width of the building - it's one unit long, and the height is also one unit.

6 Then came he unto the gate which looketh toward the east, and went up the stairs thereof, and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad.

*Then he reached the eastern gate, climbed its stairs, and measured the gate's thresholds. Both thresholds were each one reed wide.

7 And every little chamber was one reed long, and one reed broad; and between the little chambers were five cubits; and the threshold of the gate by the porch of the gate within was one reed.

*Every small room was as long and wide as a reed, and there were five feet between them. The doorway's threshold at the entrance was also a reed's length.

8 He measured also the porch of the gate within, one reed.

*He measured the small inside entrance area, which was just one reed long.

9 Then measured he the porch of the gate, eight cubits; and the posts thereof, two cubits; and the porch of the gate was inward.

*Then, he measured the porch area of the gate, which was eight cubits long, and the posts were two cubits wide. The porch was slightly inside the main structure.

10 And the little chambers of the gate eastward were three on this side, and three on that side; they three were of one measure: and the posts had one measure on this side and on that side.

*The small rooms by the east gate had three on one side and three on the other; all three rooms were the same size. The support columns were also the same size on both sides.

11 And he measured the breadth of the entry of the gate, ten cubits; and the length of the gate, thirteen cubits.

*He measured the width of the entrance as ten units and the length as thirteen units.

12 The space also before the little chambers was one cubit on this side, and the space was one cubit on that side: and the little chambers were six cubits on this side, and six cubits on that side.

*The space in front of the small rooms was 1 unit long on one side and 1 unit long on the other side. The small rooms were 6 units long on one side and 6 units long on the other side.

13 He measured then the gate from the roof of one little chamber to the roof of another: the breadth was five and twenty cubits, door against door.

*He calculated the size of the gate by measuring from the top of one small room to the top of another next to it. It was 5 and a half meters wide, with doors touching each other.

14 He made also posts of threescore cubits, even unto the post of the court round about the gate.

*He created posts that were sixty cubits long all around the courtyard's gate.

15 And from the face of the gate of the entrance unto the face of the porch of the inner gate were fifty cubits.

*From the gate's front to the porch's front at the inner gate, it was 50 cubit long.

16 And there were narrow windows to the little chambers, and to their posts within the gate round about, and likewise to the arches: and windows were round about inward: and upon each post were palm trees.

*The verse says that there were small windows in the tiny rooms and along the walls inside the entrance door all around. There were also windows on the inside facing inwards. And on top of each post, they had pictures of palm trees.

17 Then brought he me into the outward court, and, lo, there were chambers, and a pavement made for the court round about: thirty chambers were upon the pavement.

*Then he led me to the outer courtyard, and I saw that there were rooms and a walkway around it; on this walkway were thirty rooms.

18 And the pavement by the side of the gates over against the length of the gates was the lower pavement.

*The walkway next to the gates, opposite the length of the gates, was the lower walkway.

19 Then he measured the breadth from the forefront of the lower gate unto the forefront of the inner court without, an hundred cubits eastward and northward.

*Then, he measured the width from the front of the lower gate to the front of the outer court's entrance. It was 100 cubits towards the east and north direction.

20 And the gate of the outward court that looked toward the north, he measured the length thereof, and the breadth thereof.

*He measured the gate's length and width in the outer courtyard facing north.

21 And the little chambers thereof were three on this side and three on that side; and the posts thereof and the arches thereof were after the measure of the first gate: the length thereof was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.

*The small rooms had three on one side and three on the other. The posts and arches were like the first gate's size. It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide.

22 And their windows, and their arches, and their palm trees, were after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up unto it by seven steps; and the arches thereof were before them.

*The windows, arches, and palm trees were like the big gate facing east. They climbed up using seven steps and the arches were in front of them.

23 And the gate of the inner court was over against the gate toward the north, and toward the east; and he measured from gate to gate an hundred cubits.

*The inner court's gate faced both the north and east gates. The distance between these gates was 100 cubits.

24 After that he brought me toward the south, and behold a gate toward the south: and he measured the posts thereof and the arches thereof according to these measures.

*Then he guided me southward, where I saw a gate facing south. He measured the posts and arches as follows.

25 And there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about, like those windows: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.

*The building had windows all around its arches, similar to other windows. It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide.

26 And there were seven steps to go up to it, and the arches thereof were before them: and it had palm trees, one on this side, and another on that side, upon the posts thereof.

*There were seven steps to climb, and the building had arches. On each side, there was a palm tree on the posts.

27 And there was a gate in the inner court toward the south: and he measured from gate to gate toward the south an hundred cubits.

*In the inner courtyard, there was a gate facing south. Measuring from one gate to another, it was 100 cubits long.

28 And he brought me to the inner court by the south gate: and he measured the south gate according to these measures;

*He took me to the inner courtyard through the south entrance, and measured the south gate using these specific dimensions.

29 And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, according to these measures: and there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.

*The small rooms, posts, and arches of this structure followed these measurements. Windows were also present on it and its arches all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide.

30 And the arches round about were five and twenty cubits long, and five cubits broad.

*The arches all around were 25 yards long and 5 yards wide.

31 And the arches thereof were toward the utter court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof: and the going up to it had eight steps.

*The arches faced the outer area, with palm trees on the support columns. It had a stairway with eight steps to reach it.

32 And he brought me into the inner court toward the east: and he measured the gate according to these measures.

*He took me to the inner courtyard facing east and measured the gate using these specific measurements.

33 And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, were according to these measures: and there were windows therein and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.

*The small rooms, posts, and arches of this structure followed these measurements. Windows were in the walls and arches all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide.

34 And the arches thereof were toward the outward court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the going up to it had eight steps.

*The arches faced the outer court, with palm trees on each side of the posts. It had eight steps to climb.

35 And he brought me to the north gate, and measured it according to these measures;

*He took me to the top entrance of the city walls and measured it using these standards.

36 The little chambers thereof, the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, and the windows to it round about: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.

*The small rooms, supports, arches, and surrounding windows of that structure: its length was 50 units and width was 25 units.

37 And the posts thereof were toward the utter court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the going up to it had eight steps.

*The verse says: The structure had posts with palm trees on both sides. It had a total of eight steps to reach it.

38 And the chambers and the entries thereof were by the posts of the gates, where they washed the burnt offering.

*The rooms and their passages were near the gateposts, where they cleaned the sacrifices that were burned.

39 And in the porch of the gate were two tables on this side, and two tables on that side, to slay thereon the burnt offering and the sin offering and the trespass offering.

*On each side of the entrance, there were four tables for placing the burnt offerings, sin offerings, and trespass offerings.

40 And at the side without, as one goeth up to the entry of the north gate, were two tables; and on the other side, which was at the porch of the gate, were two tables.

*At the side outside, as you walk towards the top of the north gate, there were two tables. On the opposite side, near the entrance of the gate, there were also two tables.

41 Four tables were on this side, and four tables on that side, by the side of the gate; eight tables, whereupon they slew their sacrifices.

*On each side of the gate, there were four tables. In total, there were eight tables used for offering sacrifices.

42 And the four tables were of hewn stone for the burnt offering, of a cubit and an half long, and a cubit and an half broad, and one cubit high: whereupon also they laid the instruments wherewith they slew the burnt offering and the sacrifice.

*The four big stone tables were for burning offerings. They were 2.5 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, and 1 meter tall. On these tables, they placed the tools used to kill the animals for the offerings and sacrifices.

43 And within were hooks, an hand broad, fastened round about: and upon the tables was the flesh of the offering.

*Inside were big hooks, a wide hand attached all around; on the tables was the meat of the sacrifice.

44 And without the inner gate were the chambers of the singers in the inner court, which was at the side of the north gate; and their prospect was toward the south: one at the side of the east gate having the prospect toward the north.

*The singers' rooms were inside the courtyard, near the north gate. They faced south, while the room by the east gate faced north.

45 And he said unto me, This chamber, whose prospect is toward the south, is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the house.

*He told me that the room facing south is for the priests, who take care of the house.

46 And the chamber whose prospect is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these are the sons of Zadok among the sons of Levi, which come near to the LORD to minister unto him.

*The room facing north is for the priests, who take care of the altar. They are from the family of Zadok, part of the Levi tribe, and they help God by doing special tasks for Him.

47 So he measured the court, an hundred cubits long, and an hundred cubits broad, foursquare; and the altar that was before the house.

*So, he measured the area, 100 units long and 100 units wide, perfectly square, and the altar in front of the building.

48 And he brought me to the porch of the house, and measured each post of the porch, five cubits on this side, and five cubits on that side: and the breadth of the gate was three cubits on this side, and three cubits on that side.

*He showed me the front porch of the house and measured each post. They were both five units long from one side to the other. The doorway was three units wide from one side to the other too.

49 The length of the porch was twenty cubits, and the breadth eleven cubits; and he brought me by the steps whereby they went up to it: and there were pillars by the posts, one on this side, and another on that side.

*The porch was 20 units long and 11 units wide. Steps led to it, and on each side, there was a pillar next to a post.
