1 And Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly.

*Solomon, son of David, became stronger as king, and God was with him, greatly increasing his importance.

2 Then Solomon spake unto all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every governor in all Israel, the chief of the fathers.

*Then Solomon spoke to everyone in Israel, including the leaders of thousands and hundreds, the judges, and all the governors. He also talked to the main leaders of the families.

3 So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.

*So, Solomon and everyone with him went to a high place called Gibeon. This is where Moses, who worked for God, had built a special tent long ago in the desert.

4 But the ark of God had David brought up from Kirjathjearim to the place which David had prepared for it: for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem.

*But David moved God's box from Kirjathjearim to a place he prepared in Jerusalem, where he set up a tent for it.

5 Moreover the brasen altar, that Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD: and Solomon and the congregation sought unto it.

*Additionally, the bronze altar made by Bezaleel, son of Uri and Hur, was placed in front of the LORD's dwelling. Solomon and the people went to it.

6 And Solomon went up thither to the brasen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand burnt offerings upon it.

*Solomon went to the bronze altar at the meeting place where people gathered to worship. He offered one thousand sacrifices there.

7 In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.

*In that night, God appeared to Solomon and told him to ask for anything He should give him.

8 And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.

*Solomon told God, "You were very kind to my dad, David, and now you've let me rule in his place."

9 Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.

*Now, Lord God, please make true your promise to my father David: you have made me ruler over many people, like a lot of dust on the ground.

10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

*Please provide me with wisdom and understanding, so I can lead and guide these people: because who has the ability to judge such a large population?

11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:

*God told Solomon, "Since you wanted wisdom for yourself to lead and judge my people, rather than asking for wealth or power, I will grant your request because of your loving heart."

12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

*Wisdom and understanding are given to you. I will also give you great wealth, power, and respect, unlike any other king who has come before you, and no future king will have the same.

13 Then Solomon came from his journey to the high place that was at Gibeon to Jerusalem, from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned over Israel.

*Then Solomon returned from his trip to a special place at Gibeon to Jerusalem and took charge as king over Israel after the tent where the group of people met.

14 And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, which he placed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

*Solomon collected chariots and riders; he had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He put them in chariot cities and kept some with him in Jerusalem, the king's city.

15 And the king made silver and gold at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore trees that are in the vale for abundance.

*The king made silver and gold in Jerusalem very common, like stones, and he made cedar trees as plentiful as sycamore trees in the valley because of the abundance.

16 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king’s merchants received the linen yarn at a price.

*Solomon got horses from Egypt and also bought linen thread. The king's traders paid for the linen thread.

17 And they fetched up, and brought forth out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so brought they out horses for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, by their means.

*They arrived and got a chariot from Egypt for 600 silver shekels, and a horse for 150. They also got horses for all the Hittite kings and Syrian kings using this method.
