1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

*Now, we kindly ask you, brothers and sisters, for the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering with him.

2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

*So you won't be easily confused or disturbed by messages or letters claiming the day of Christ is coming soon.

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

*Don't let anyone mislead you in any way: that day won't happen unless there is a turning away from the truth first, and the wicked person leading this is exposed - the one destined for destruction.

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

*Who opposes and lifts themselves above everything called God or worshipped, sitting in God's temple as if they are God, showing they think they are God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

*Don't you remember me telling you these things when I was still with you?

6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

*Now you understand what is stopping him from being shown at the right time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

*The mystery of wrongdoing is already at work. The one holding it back will keep doing so until they are removed.

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

*Then the wicked person will be revealed, who the Lord will defeat using his powerful words, and will destroy with the brightness of his arrival.

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

*Even the person who comes later, using Satan's power to do signs and false miracles.

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

*People who are dishonest and do wrong things will eventually perish. This happens because they didn't accept the truth and its love, which could have saved them.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

*So, because of this, God will give them a powerful false belief, making them think a lie is true.

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

*So that everyone who didn't believe in the truth would be lost, and they enjoyed doing wrong things.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

*We always need to thank God for you, dear brothers, because He chose you from the start to be saved through the Holy Spirit's holiness and believing in the truth.

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

*He called you through our message to get the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

*So, friends, stay strong and keep the teachings you've learned, whether from what was said or from our letter.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

*Now, our Lord Jesus Christ and God, who is also our Father, loves us and gives us eternal comfort and a good future because of His kindness.

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

*Cheer up and be strong in doing all the good things and actions.
