Warns against false teachers and emphasizes the importance of growing in faith.

1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

*From Simon Peter, a servant and messenger of Jesus, to those who have gained a valuable faith like ours through God's fairness and our savior, Jesus:

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

*May lots of grace and peace increase for you as you learn more about God and Jesus, our leader.

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

*As God's power gives us everything we need for a good life and being close to Him, this comes through knowing the one who has invited us to shine and do what is right.

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

*Through which we receive amazing and valuable promises: so that you can share in God's nature and avoid the world's corruption caused by desire.

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

*Also, put a lot of effort into it, add goodness to your belief, and then add understanding.

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

*And wisdom goes with self-control; and self-control comes with calmness; and calmness brings goodness from God;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

*And true religious devotion leads to kindness between brothers; and kind acts lead to giving to others in need.

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

*If you have these things and they are abundant, they will help you not to be without growth or unproductive in knowing our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

*But if someone doesn't have these things, they can't see far and have forgotten being freed from their past sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

*So, brothers, try harder to prove your calling and choosing are real; because if you do this, you won't fail.

11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

*An abundance of entry will be given to you into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

*So, I won't forget to remind you about these things often, even if you already know them and are strong in what is true now.

13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

*Yes, I believe it is appropriate while I am in this temporary home to encourage you by reminding you.

14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

*Understanding that soon I will leave this body, just as our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me.

15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

*I will also try to make sure you remember these things even after I'm gone.

16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

*We didn't tell you stories that are just made up. When we shared about the strength and return of Jesus, we did it because we saw his greatness ourselves.

17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

*For he got honor and praise from God the Father, when a great voice said to him, "This is my dear Son, who makes me very happy."

18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

*We heard a voice from heaven while we were with him on a sacred mountain.

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

*We have an even stronger prediction; you should pay close attention to it, like a light shining in a dark place, until the day gets brighter and a bright star appears in your hearts.

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

*Understand that no scripture prophecy has a personal explanation; it's clear and shared by all.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

*The prophecy didn't come from people's wishes in the past; it was holy people guided by the Holy Spirit who shared God's messages.
