Chapter 3

1 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

*So when we couldn't wait any longer, we decided it was best for someone to stay in Athens.

2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:

*He sent Timothy, our friend and helper of God, who works together with us in spreading the good news. He went to strengthen you and encourage you about your faith.

3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

*So that people don't get upset by these troubles: because you understand that it's our job to go through them.

4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

*Indeed, when we were with you, we warned you that we would face hardships. It happened just like we said, and you know it's true.

5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

*Because of this, when I couldn't wait any longer, I asked about your faith, so that the temptor wouldn't trick you, and our efforts wouldn't be wasted.

6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

*But now, when Timothy arrived from you to us and shared news of your strong faith and kindness towards others, and how you always remember us fondly, wanting very much to meet us, just like we want to meet you.

7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:

*So, friends, we felt better because of your strong belief while we went through hard times.

8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

*As long as you stay strong in the Lord, we will thrive.

9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;

*What can we thank God for giving us again, for the happiness we feel because of you, which we share with our God?

10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

*Pray constantly for us, so we can meet you and complete what's missing in your belief.

11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.

*Now, God, our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, are guiding us to you.

12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

*May the Lord cause you to grow and have lots of love for each other and everyone else, just like how we love you.

13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

*So that your hearts can be completely blameless in holiness, we pray this to happen in the presence of God, our Father, when our Lord Jesus Christ returns with all his saints.
